I woke up at 7:30a.m. to get ready for the funeral. It doesn't start until 11:00 but I need to get myself together. I took a warm shower and Did my hair.
I turned on me and Jasmines favorite song Blessing by Kcamp. I sung along while curling my hair.
" You ain't gotta cry no more you ain't gotta cry no more ." I sang that part referring to Jasmine. It was now 9:25, Jeremy had just woke up. I was eating cereal. Unlike him I don't like to cook. I heard the hallway shower running. While he was in the shower my phone went off.
It was KD texting me
KD🖕💰🌬🚬: What's the problem you haven't been to work in 3 days . I need them keys .
Koko🍑🍼: Its a lot going on right now. I aint got the keys check with Tberry.
KD🖕💰🌬🚬:What's going on? Every thang straight?
Koko🍑🍼:Jalil is dead , my son is in the hospital , my momma is in the hospital and today is my best friends funeral.
KD🖕💰🌬🚬: Why ain't no body tell me? Take yo time to get yourself together . I'll get Tberry to handle yo time.
I didn't reply . Jeremy finally got out of the Shower . I was brushing my teeth in my bathroom and he came in.
" You almost ready?"he asked . I finished brushing my teeth and washed my face.
I looked at him to see he had on a pink polo shirt and khaki pants and Sperry's.
I looked at the time and it was 10:15. I nodded at Jeremy and we left. We rode in his car. On the way to the church I zoned out and began to think about all the things Jasmine and I had been through. We fought together We rode together. Every thing that went on in our life we did it together. That was my ride or die and my bestest friend. Long live Jasmine.
During the funeral service i was comforting Jasmines mother. I think i only made it worst because we had on the same thing.
It was my time to say my final words. I walked over to the casket and kissed it. The pearl white casket was closed. Her mom said she didnt want any makeup on her so she just had it closed.
"You new in this neighborhood?" I remember Jasmine asking me a couple days after i moved to jackson.
I was in the neighborhood park playing basketball. This was when we still had a semi safe park. I shot a 3 and looked at her," Yea ."
She got the ball and gave it too me . "Cool , where you from?"
I shot but missed. Thats when we start playing one on one. " Im from New orleans uptown 3rd ward."
"Thats cool , how old you is?" She asked as i blocked her shot.
"Eight ,you?" I said trying to gaurd the ball.
"Eight, " she said out of breath," What school you going too?"
I was out of breath as well " i dont know yet ."
"Oh , i go to George elementary." She said bouncing the ball.
" That aint in this school zone. How you go over there?" i asked sitting on the concrete.
"My momma and daddy nem used to stay over there . So we just used the same address." She looked at me and then sat beside me.
"Why y'all move?" I asked. I was a nosey little girl.
"Why you move ?" She asked looking at me.
I looked off . "Well i gotta go." I got up and got my ball.
"I aint mean to be mean, thats just some i dont like to talk 'bout" she said standing up.
I remeber looking back at her ," i dont like to talk about why i moved either but , i stay in the light purple house with the white poles. First house on the third street , the one with the rose bushes. You can come by when ever you want ."
She nodded and smiled. "Aye , how you know how too play baseyball?"
She never said basketball. The majority of the people ive been around since ive been in Mississippi have said Baseyball.
I laughed at her. " You mean basketball? And my mawmaw taught me when i was five."
She nodded and started to walk with me back to my house. We got to the first stop sign and her momma yelled her whole name.
"Jasmine MaBria Janell Monea Lashae Williams! I done told you about walking up and down these streets without telling me where you going! You got 5 seconds to tell yo lil friend bye. 5...""Um, imma gone go back in the house before she start swinging on me. " jasmine said laughing a little .
I nodded and said," Okay . I like yo' name by the way. Mines Korlin. "
"3...!" Her momma kept counting.
"Oh okay , but for real i got to go before she beat me . Come to the park tomorrow so we can play baseyball. " she said very fast running across the street.
" Bye , baby . Jasmine can come out later on if you come back but right now she got some stuff she need to do. " her momma said . I didnt know her but i said yes ma'am and walked home bouncing my ball.
"Jasmine, you will never be forgotten.Your spot in my heart will never be filled. We've had good times and bad times. Even though we havent even reached our adult years, we've been through so much together and no one understands that but you and i. I love you bestfriend. " i said as i kiss her casket and sit back next to her mother.
All the memories Jasmine and i had played throughout my mind. Im going to miss you Bestfriend. I wish heaven had visiting hours . My head so messed up right now. She didnt even get to see her twenty first birthday and thats all she ever talked about. Cause we didnt do sweet sixteens so we said we where going to do our Twenty First bash.
My mind is so cluttered i didnt even realize that they were taking the casket to the grave. I finally got up and went to the grave.
This is too much. And now i have to get ready for Jalils funeral. All of this for what? Over what?
Jasmine in the media.
