*One Day Before the Trial*
Chelsea's POV
"Can you tell me again what happened?" the lawyer, Mark, asks me."My parents were fighting so I grabbed my little sister and went upstairs. That's when I looked out and saw my mother shooting my father three times exactly. Then, I locked me and my little sister in my bedroom and called the police. They showed up, me and my sister got separated, and I ended up at the police station where Billie picked me up and brought me home," I describe the event halfheartedly since this is the fourth time he's asked me this question. "Please have more enthusiasm," Mark tells me. I don't know why, but ever since we've met, there's been an ongoing, mutual disliking between the two of us. We are currently sat alone in the kitchen, practicing what questions will come up during the trial. Mark sighs, but before he can ask another question, Billie enters the room with bags of food in his hands. "Hey, Chels!" he chirps. "Hi," I say tiredly. Adie walks in behind him and hugs me before standing next to him. They begin to pull the food out of the bags and its aroma pulls me in. I look at the food as they pull it out and the bag says "In and Out." Adie's grabs a plate from the cupboard and puts some fries and a burger onto it before handing it to me. "I thought you two could use a break. Mark, would you like anything?" Adie asks him. He shakes his head and begins packing up his things.
"She's ready for the trial. They're mainly gonna ask her what happened and if she's happy here, so you've got nothing to worry about," he begins calmly, "I'd better get going though. My son has a soccer game and I promised that if be there." Billie says, "Okay. Thanks for this. We don't want her to go to jail or anything." "No problem," Mark says, glaring at me before he leaves the house. Once I hear the door close behind him I pout at Billie. He has just taken a large bite of food and he looks at me, "What?" "I don't like Mark...or the trial," I admit. Suddenly, Jake and Joey push each other into the kitchen to get food. "Hey, Dad? Why do we keep getting food from places instead of Mom making it?" Jake asks. Billie looks away from me and instead looks at Jake. "Because, Chelsea hasn't had any of it and we need to catch her up," Billie shrugs. "Well, thank God for Chelsea then," Joey says, smiling at me.
I smile back and say, "I'm not hungry." I push away the plate of food and walk upstairs. I open my bedroom door and lay down on my soft, comfortable bed. My phone vibrates and I pull it out of my front pocket.
Andy: just letting u know that there's a party tonight if u wanna go
Me: uhhhh. Idk. I have to be ready for tomorrow...I have plans.
Andy: what's tomorrow??
I think for a second and come up with a lie, even though I feel terrible about lying to Andy.
Me: i have to attend my dad's funeral
Andy: oh ok. Have fun?? I dont really know how to do the comforting thing
Me: its ok
I sigh and put my phone beside me, staring up at the ceiling. Why did I lie to Andy? He's been so nice to me, and I just lied to him. Why would I do that? I take a deep breath and get into my pajamas(basically just a sweatpants and a T-shirt). Even though it's only six, I frankly just want to sleep, only to be awaken by my worst nightmare. There's a knock at my door, but before I can even allow them entry, they walk in. Adie walks in and sits at the foot of my bed with a smile. I sit up with my legs crossed. "How are you doing, hon?" Adie asks softly. I shrug and force a smile to make her feel better. "You're gonna do fine tomorrow; You'll definitely win the case and—" she begins. "You think I'm worried about the trial? It's not that at all. It's...it's the fact that once my mom goes to jail...that's it. There's—never mind. I'm even confusing myself," I stand up and walk into my bathroom to get ready for bed.
"If you don't wanna talk about it that's fine, but you have to tell me so I don't nag you about it," Adie begins before hugging me, "You can tell me anything and I promise it'll stay between us only, okay?" I nod my head and start to brush my teeth as she leaves my room. I was a bit of a b*tch just now(I learned a lot of cuss words from Jake and Joey last night). After brushing my teeth, I lay in my bed again and worry about what's going to happen after the trial tomorrow. I'm legally going to be a part of this family tomorrow. They're gonna be disappointed with me. I'm not as fun or as smart as Jakob and Joey, and I'm definitely not the smartest when it comes to music.
Adie stands in the doorway of my room and says, "If you want, we're going to watch a movie downstairs. If you don't, that's okay too." She smiles at me before walking back downstairs. I hesitate for a moment, debating if it's even a good idea to go downstairs. After a minute or two, I make my way to the living room where everyone(Billie, Adie, Jake, and Joey) is sitting down on the couch. I sit next to Jake and Joey to watch the movie. Billie is searching through a list on the TV of all the "premium" movies and asks, "What does everyone want to watch?" Jake and Joey begin to shout out different answers. I looked at the list and saw Zootopia. "What about that one?" I ask, quieter than the two yelling boys. They all quiet down and look at me happily. "Okay! I love this movie," Billie says, clicking the title.
We watch the movie and it sounds just like when my mom taught me about The Civil Rights movement. It's a good movie though. I just wasn't expecting cartoonish animals to play the roles.
*
I end up falling asleep on the couch along with Jake and Joey. Adie tucks us in and I dream about everything that will happen after the trial tomorrow. I say dream, but I really mean I'm having a nightmare.A/N: Heyyy beautiful people!!! Hope u are all doing well! AHHHH! I'm so excited! The final chapter will be coming up and I'm so excited for it!
