[12] - The Diner
C h a r l o t t e
"Hello?"
"Charlotte? Are you alright? You haven't been at work in almost three weeks." My boss's voice rang through the phone. It finally hit me.
I forgot about my job.
"Mrs. Rhonda, I'm so sorry. I've just been going through a lot at the moment. I'll come and work a shift right after school tomorrow." I quickly explained.
"Alright. Is there anything you'd like to tell me?" She asked.
"Yeah, a lot actually." I replied.
Mrs. Rhonda Mae was like my grandmother. She was always there for me when my parents weren't. Which was all the time. I've known her about two years, when I started working at the diner as a waitress. She always asked if I was alright. She told me I could tell about anything I needed too. And I have.
"Ok deary, I'll be here when you get here. Don't do anything stupid, alright?"
"Yes ma'am,"
She hung up the phone.
I sighed, walking over to the calendar on the wall, and marking today with a red X.
two and a half months left.
-
I twirled around a bit in the large full length mirror. A royal blue top, white skirt and converses. Decent enough. But, I felt like there was something missing.
A headband!
I searched in my bag for one. A white Nike headband caught my eye. I slid it on over my head.
There.
Now I have to get to school.
-
A lot of people stared at me as I got out of Niall's car. I guess they weren't expecting me to drive it, without him actually in the car with me.
I took off my sunglasses, and the bright Sacramento sun nearly blinded me.
I'm seriously over exaggerating.
I went straight to my locker, keeping my head down. I really didn't want to look at all the people who were staring at me, it was uncomfortable.
"Why was Niall not at school today? I saw Charlotte get out of his car but he wasn't there." A junior whispered to her friend.
"I heard he was in jail for beating up Aaron or something. That's all I know." Her friend whispered back.
I clenched my fists together and got the books I needed, my anger slowly melting away, only to be replaced with annoyance.
-
"Goodbye Mrs. Freeman!" I waved as I left the classroom.
Diner time.
I put my stuff away, and went to Niall's car. The ride was short, which was great. After parking the car, I rushed into the rundown diner.
"Charlotte! My baby!" The chubby, short woman squeezed me tightly.
"Hi Mrs. Rhonda," I smiled at her.
I was only a little taller, so I didn't have to look down or up, which was so much easier. When I hugged or even talked to Niall, I had to look up a bit because I was blessed with genes of being freakishly short.
"Let's get you into the back," I was suddenly pushed into the back of the building. I was handed my apron, which I tied on.
"Ok, tell Ma' what's wrong." She said, sitting us both down in her office. I sat in one of the office chairs as she sat at her desk.
"Where should I start?" I asked.
"The beginning." She replied, urging me to continue.
And so I did.
-
After I told Mrs. Rhonda everything.
I even told her that I was having these feelings I have never had before.
She told me I was slowly falling into the dark pit we call 'love'. And you can't get out of that dark pit. I didn't really want to believe it, but I guess I had to.
"Charlotte! You've got another table!" Carter, another employee called to me from the register.
"Got it!" I rushed over to the newly filled table, pen in hand.
"Hello, my name is-"
"Charlotte?" A familiar voice inquired. I looked away from the clipboard only to be met with the familiar chocolate coloured eyes.
"Liam?" I smiled at him.
"I didn't know you worked here." He started, returning the grin. I noticed that he wasn't exactly alone. There were three other guys in the booth with him.
"Whose the guys?" I asked sweetly.
"Louis," he pointed go a boy with shaggy brown hair.
"Harry," he pointed to a boy with curly brown hair.
"And last but certainly the least, Zayn." he pointed to a boy with dark brown hair styled in a quiff. The boy playfully punched Liam in the arm.
"Nice to meet you guys, but I'm going to need to take your order."
-
