YOU CHOSE THE ROSE GARDEN OVER MADISON SQUARE (the irony)

-

Luke stood in his kitchen, which was now fully refurbished after two weeks of painting and buying kitchen essentials, like a microwave and a stove and fridge etc, he'd gone for a sort of retro theme, the fridge being blue to match the shutters on the outside of the house.

Luke mixed the pasta in the pot in the stove, looking up and out of the window that over looked his sort of empty back garden.

He saw a cat walking across the back wall that signalled the end of his garden, beyond that wall was a field and a farm.

Luke left the pasta before he went to his back door, opening it as he grabbed a bowl, filling it with water. He would let the cat come in on its own time and hope it drank.

It didn't take long till the grey cat came in, it drank the water before it jumped up on to the counter next to Luke.

Luke smiled, reaching up to pet the cat before he heard his front door open and close.

He glanced behind him to see Michael standing there, "why do you have my cat?"

"It's yours?" Luke questioned, seeing the cat had no collar.

Michael nodded, "she's called Gretchen," he said, moving to Luke and petting his cat. "Everyone on the block feeds her, she's a little fatty." Michael chuckled.

Michael finished the rest of the pasta, letting Luke sit down on the floor and stroke Gretchen.

Michael looked out the window, "you should do up the garden." He told Luke.

"I was thinking the same thing." Luke shrugged. "I've always liked roses."

"We can go tomorrow?" Michael asked and Luke hummed.

The next day the two men went to the local garden centre which was small, but it had a mini golf course and a small café.

The two walked around with the trolley, plants already in the basket before Michael stopped. "You should get this." He said and Luke looked down to see he was pointing at a naked Angel sculpture. "You can make the garden real fancy."

Luke smiled, "okay, you can carry it though."

Michael grinned and put the heavy sculpture in the trolley.

After buying more plants and putting them in Luke's car, the two went back in and to the café.

They got sandwiches and tea before they sat down in the corner on a tan sofa, the two of them talking quietly as they teared their sandwiches up in to small pieces to eat them.

"There's two girls over there," Michael said. "They keep looking over here."

Luke raised his eyebrows and glanced behind him to see the girls quickly look away. "They probably recognise me." Luke shrugged.

"Don't you want to talk to them?" Michael questioned.

"I will when we leave." Luke smiled.

After they'd eaten and drank their tea, Michael went to put their rubbish away, so Luke went over to the two girls. They looked to be fifteen or sixteen so Luke sat opposite them.

"Hey." He smiled, "I'm guessing you recognised me," he said awkwardly, scratching his head.

The two nodded in sync, "you've been missing for weeks." One said, her bright red hair and freckles making her stand out. "I heard you collapsed on stage and we were really worried."

Luke smiled, glancing behind him to Michael. "Uh I'm sorry about dropping off the face of the earth but I didn't want to do it anymore. If you knew what I had to do, you'd leave it behind too."

The girls nodded, "will you ever come back to singing?" The other girl asked, she had blonde long hair.

"I don't think so," luke admitted, "I'm sorry."

The girls nodded with small smiles, "we won't tell anyone we saw you."

"Thank you," he smiled about to stand up before the ginger girl perked up again.

"Is he your boyfriend? You seemed quite close." She asked and Luke looked between Michael and then the girls.

"Not yet."
