I slowly open my eyes. A headache comes crashing down. Instantly, I know it's gonna be a bad day. There's a feeling of heaviness around me.
I sit up on my elbows. A gray morning light comes through my closed windows.
I swivel my head towards my clock.
8:12. Gosh, I sure woke up early. Darn it.
The smell of coffee wafts up from downstairs.
I throw off my covers, and head down the stairs, eager for breakfast.
The dull feeling still hangs over me like a cloud. A feeling like...something's missing.
My mom and Dad sit at the table, in their robes, reading the newspaper and magazines, a cup of coffee in their hands.
"Hey MiMi. You're up early." Mom says, never lifting her eyes from a Target ad.
"Tell me about it." I groan. I walk over to the fridge, and look in it. Nothing good.
I bring out the ingredients for pancakes.
"What'cha doing sweetheart?" Dad asks.
"Making pancakes. Where's Sophie?"
"At a friend's house. Or her boyfriend's. Who knows?" Dad answers.
I laugh, and start mixing eggs and milk together.
By the time I'm done making the pancake batter, 5 minutes has gone by. I was a little slow.
Suddenly, my dad gasps loudly.
My mom and I stare at him.
"Eric?" Mom asks.
I watch as Dad scans the paper, then hands it over to Mom.
"Karen, take a look at this." He points to a spot on the page.
Mom clasps a hand to her mouth in surprise. Then tears fall silently.
"Mom? Dad?" I croak. "What is it?"
When they don't answer, I snatch the paper away from Mom and look at it for myself.
I start at the top of the page, and skim through downwards.
Blah, Blah, Blah, it's just a bunch up junk-
My eye catches on medium, bold lettering.
Fear and panic rises in my throat.
No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No, No!
I read the title again, along with the extra info below in.
Hot tears snake their way down my cheeks.
This can't be happening. I'm still dreaming. Yeah, that's the problem.
But I know it's not. I feel the emptiness in the pit of my stomach.
I read the title again.
