Friday

My mom turns off the car engine. I groan as the song Toothbrush, slowly fades away.

My mom turns around in her seat to face me, her ginger blonde hair covering a quarter of her face, and stopping at her angular jaw.

"Have fun and don't run off." She tells me, her soft, brown eyes glowing.

"Same for you. Have fun with the moms."

"I will." She reaches out, and caresses my cheek. "You're so beautiful darling. You know that, right?"

No. "Yes." I say sweetly.

"Good. Come on, let's go have fun."

We get out of the car, and head to Mia's back yard. Mia's on her trampoline with Jocelyn. I run up to greet them, and hop on the bouncy black material.

"Hey."

"Hey. What's up?" Mia asks.

"The sky."

"Oh yeah, like I haven't heard that one before." Mia says, sarcastically.

"Well, good thing you heard it from me first then." I say.

Mia wrinkles her nose at me. "Whatever." A faint smile spreads across her face.

"Hey, Elle, watch this." Joce asks. She jumps up and flips twice before landing back on the trampoline.

Her landing launches me up a bit. "Cool. Hey. What about Andy? He coming? And Mads?"

They share a knowing look. I know what it's about. They think Andy likes me. He had, in the past. But he got over it. I know who he really likes though.

"Andy's picking up Colton. Do you remember him?" Jocelyn asks. I nod my head. "Yeah, well they bonded and Colton's new here, so he thought we should welcome him to our circle of friends. Oh, and Mads is coming late, for whatever reason."

"Oh."

"Yep."

"Mia! Could'ya come over here and help please?" Mia's mom, Karen, calls out.

Mia groans, but leaves the trampoline and we follow.

We help make a salad, make desert, (cheesecake), and help grill chicken patties, hot dogs and cheese burgers.

As soon as we all sit down to eat, my mom, me, Mia and her mom, dad and sister, Joce and her mom and dad, the next door neighbors come on over.

The boy Jack from our grade, and his mom, dad, and older sister.

"Hey! Eric, my man! What's up?" The dad says, and Mia's dad comes up to him and they pat each other's shoulders.

Mia turns to her mom. "I didn't know you invited them."

"Oh, sorry, must've forgot to tell you." Her mom holds a mischievous glint in her eyes.
