I try to get back into the principal's office, even though Maddy shuts the door. She stands up against the door, gripping the handle.
Jocelyn shoves me, enough where I stumble back, and let my head clear a little from the rage that clouded it.
"What's wrong with you!?" She demands.
I stare at her, fists clenched.
"Are you stupid? You can't claw at someone to bring Ellie back!" She yells.
I glance around, and the secretary is staring at us. And I see Jack, arm outstretched halfway to the secretary, handing a paper to her, staring too. That's what breaks me. I hadn't expected him to be here.
The tears come fast and furious, breaking down a wall of anger that I've built up.
I put my head in my hands , and let the sobs rack my body.
The whole waiting room is silent.
Then, a pair of arms encircle me.
"It's okay Mia. Shhh. It's okay." Jocelyn says, rubbing my back, like I did to Ellie so many times, long ago.
"I'm s-sorry." I sob.
"Shhh. Just calm down. It's okay Mia. Everything will be okay. Calm down."
I let the tears stroll down my face, and I let the anger slowly seep out, replaced by crushing sadness.
And I can't take it. I sink slowly to the floor, and I listen as shouts from the other side of the principal's door signify that Hannah isn't too happy.
I lean my head back against a chair, my lungs hiccupping, trying to breathe over the power of my sobs.
Jocelyn looks like she doesn't know what to do now. Madelyn still guards the door.
What have I just done? Stupid, stupid.
Which is what Jocelyn said.
I harden up again, the tears stopping.
"Are you good?" Joce asks.
"Yes." I say sharply.
"Hey, don't get mad at me. I was just trying to stop you from clawing off Hannah's face. And you punched her? Mia, Mia, Mia. God-"
"Shut up! Just shut up Jocelyn!" My voice starts to raise again, the anger building a new wall.
Jack is over at my side, hand on my arm. "Hey,"
I twist my head to look at him, and the anger fades again.
How does he break my wall?
"Mia, come with me." He helps me up, and looks at the secretary for permission to take me out of the front office. He leads me to a small room off of the front office, full of metal cabniets and a single, circular desk and plush chairs. He closes the door.
I try not to look him in the eyes, but he lightly grabs my chin and lifts my face to his.
He searches my face, looking for something.
"Well, that was intense."
And I laugh, because it's just so casual. Like I didn't just try to rip someone's eyes out, not that he knows much about that subject yet. But the laugh is humorless and without any emotion.
I lean my head against his chest. He rubs my arms.
"You know, Mia, clawing off someone's face isn't the best way to let out anger."
