Chapter 16: Grief

(Nightwing's POV)

I smash robot after robot with me bostaff, pin head after head to the wall with my birdarangs. The fight was long and tedious. The robots didn't stop coming. We couldn't keep fighting like this. I finish smashing two of the robots heads together as I hear Star yell.

"MARCO!!!!"

I spin around to see a robot poised to bring his sword down upon Marco's back. We were all to far away to do anything. This was the end of Marco. As the robot started to make the decent, a pink blur flew through an open skylight and flew between the robot and Marco. The sword sliced the new target right in the chest as it went spiralling out if control and hitting a wall. I flicked round to see a bloody splat where the blur had hit the the wall, and bellow it was Starfire, a huge gash on her stomach and chest. I ran towards her, breaking robots blindly in my rage and pain. I grab her and pull her towards me. "Listen Star, you aren't going to die on me. Not today, not ever."

I yell over to beast boy and Cyborg. "HELP ME GET HER OUT OF HERE!"

They run over and put an arm around each of their shoulders and carry her out. I throw some bombs onto each of the supporting pillars and yell to the others. "GET OUT. THIS PLACE IS ABOUT TO BLOW!"

They all run out and I look at the robot filled room. "This ends now."

I pushed a button and the whole room collapsed, crushing every robot. I run over to where the rest of the team are to see them huddling Starfire. Stella looks up at me. "I've done the best I can, but it doesn't look good."

I lean in so that we are a whisper away from each other. She opens her eyes. "Robin, is that you?"

"Yes Starfire, I'm here."

"Robin, I know you don't want to here it, but I'm not going to make it."

Tears were welling up in my eyes. "No. You're going to survive. You are going to live because I don't know what to do if I lost you. I love you Starfire. I've always loved you, even when you turned me away."

"Robin, I see now that I have made some grave mistakes, the biggest of which was abandoning you. I just realised that it took me until I was on my last breath to realise that I love you and that it was my fault that we could never find happiness in each other. But I know one mistake I'm not going to make. Robin, I want you to rule Tamaran as my successor."

"But Star..."

"Robin, rule over and lead them with the integrity and valour that you have always shown all your friends. I want them to know that I'm always thinking of them, and that I'm always thinking of you. And Robin?"

"Yes Starfire?" I was crying by now.

"Please...remember...me."

He eyes fell shut as I brought her hand to my mouth and kissed it. We all stood there for a few hours before the guards came by to see what had happened. They ran up to the body and gave me a look of sadness. I told then her last request. The lead me up to a balcony overlooking the city, with all the inhabitants beneath it. I stood up to the ledge.

"I'm sorry to say, that your queen is dead. She was killed protecting all of you from evil. Starfire was my best friend, and maybe I should have told her that more often. But we shouldn't dwell on the past. Your queen was a kind and graceful ruler, one you could alway rely on. And in her dying breath, she appointed me her successor, as a showing of how she would never forget you. She said she already kicked me to the curb once, she would not make that mistake a second time. She told me not to dwell on her death, and how you shouldn't either. She said how you should see her death as a statement to you all, on how when we get pushed, we all pack together, the rich and the poor, the important and the forgotten, and march into battle together. I intend to fulfil her last wish, and to rule over you with the valour and courage that she always had. To Starfire, let her memories live on forever."

The entire city erupted into applause as I stepped off of the balcony and took a seat in one of the thrones in to main hall. Next to me was the throne that Starfire would sit in. I leans down and placed a picture of her on the chair as the gang walked up to me. Zach stepped forward.

"That was a great speech. We have to leave. I understand you will be staying her now?"

I nodded. Beast boy walked forward.

"I'm gonna miss you bro. Starfire really knew what she was doing when she picked you."

They all walked out through the main doors. I sighed as a royal guard ran over to me.

"Your highness. We were doing a surch for the staff and..."

"And what?"

"It's missing."

"WHAT!?"

(Unknown POV)

I pry the rod from the half wrecked robots hands. I have both pieces. now to put it to use.
