"And then he just grabbed my arm, hard, and dragged me to the door!" I explained the whole story to Gabby the next morning. I had snuck in at 1 a.m. and she was asleep on the couch, watching "Leave it to Beaver" re-runs and letting drool ooze out of her mouth. I tried not to laugh, so I just giggled into my hand and went into my room.
"Wow, some brother he is." She scoffed, picking out a shirt from her closet. Her outfit was"Exactly. After that I said something like 'You're not my brother if you act like this!' and he just gaped at me like some brain-dead koala!" I plopped down on my bed as we walked into my room. She just stood there, mouth open, in awe.
"One word: YGG!" She held up her hand for a high five, I stared at it for a couple seconds then fist pounded her palm. Close enough. My life was a mess at the moment so I was anything but enthused.
"Who ate your bowl of sunshine today, thundercloud?" She asked, putting her perfectly manicured hands on her hips.
"That jerk that is somewhat blood-related to me." I pick up the teddy bear (named Trudi) my mum and daddy had gotten me from Italy, when I was 4. It was the object I held most dear, like the last connection I really had with them. Besides a box of letters mom had written through her battle with cancer. Letters like "Open this on your graduation" and "Open this on your first day of College" and "Open this when you get a pet". It was cliche, but loving. I never opened the box, I never opened a letter early, and I never told Niall about his letters...
"I have to go do something" I jumped up from the bed and ran over to my closet. I quickly changed.
I looked up at the top shelf and removed some extra hats I hat to cover it up. There it was, the Box. I had forgotten how beautiful it was. Ornate carvings traveled all around its hard, wooden shape. I shakily removed it from its resting place and rushed past Gabby, who had no clue what I was doing. Then again, neither did I.
"Good luck, with...that?" She called after me. I safely tucked the box into my bag and grabbed the apartment keys, because Gabby obviously would be at work when I returned.
I fast walked into the St. Regis lobby and pushed the elevator buttom multiple times. When the doors opened I quickly scurried in and pressed the button that would take me to the lads rented out floor: 20
It was like slow motion, all of it. The doors opened and I walked out slowly. I didn't even remember walking up to his door and knocking. boom, I snapped out of the slow motion when the door opened. He looked surprised, surprised I had returned.
"Beatrice, what do you want?" He asked kind of harshly. I almost slapped him, but I contained myself.
"Can I come in, I need to show you something?" I didn't even care, I just walked right past him and into his suite. None of the other lads were there, which made me slightly happier. No words can describe how awkward that would have been.
"What do you need to show me?" He sat across from me, voice softer than 5 seconds earlier. I slowly took the fragile box out from my bag and placed it on the coffee table.
"What the fuck is that?"
"A box. Mum made it and put letters in it during the last 6 months of her life. She wrote a bunch, a stack for each of us. I wanted to give you the ones she wrote to you, and I wanted to see if...if you would read aloud the ones you've missed." I didn't look him in the eye, my voice was wobbling and I didn't want him to see me cry. I could see him nod in my periferal vision. I slowly opened the lid and took out the two stacks of letters, each delicatly wrapped with a different colored ribbon. Blue for Niall and Purple for me, because those are our favourite colours. Niall untied the ribbon and took the letter out from the bottom. He shakily read aloud: Open this after MSG. He giggled a little bit and slowly opened the letter, making sure not to rip the paper. He cleared his throat and read out loud:
Niall, my dear.
By now you've probably become world-wide known. I bet girls scream when your name is even mentioned. I just want you to know I'm proud of you, and so was your Dad. He loved you so much, and you should know that. I knew you would go places. You have the voice of an angel, my darling. Madison Square Garden...wow. That is a big place. All the famous people perform there! I hope you took lots of pictures!
If you're reading this then you and Bea have met again. She always talked about how much she missed you and how she wanted you to visit her. I just told her: "One day, sweetie, one day he's going to come back. Maybe on his holiday!" But, my dear, you didn't.
I know I'm gone by now, and that's okay. It's okay to let go. It's okay to cry. It's okay to be silent, but that doesn't mean it's not okay to talk. You're feelings are the most important to me.
I'm watching over you and Bea. Whenever you feel sad, or distressed, or forlorn...just look up. Look up at that blue sky and I'm there. Take the time to tell me why you're sad...Because I'm always listening.
I love you, more than words can describe...
Mum
He was sobbing. He barely finished the letter. I stood up and walked over to him, tears falling down my cheeks. He stood up pretty quickly and wrapped his arms around me, squeezing me with brotherly love. I missed his hugs, they were so comforting.
"I wasn't there. I-I wasn't with her. Why wasn't I told. Why-Why didn't anyone tell me about her?" He sobbed into my thin shirt. More tears fell.
"I tried to, but your number was disconnected and your email was changed. I wrote letters but all to fake addresses. I tried, Ni. I tried really hard!" My voice was shaking. He was trembling.
"It's okay now, Niall. I'm here, you're here. We are...here. After 3 years." I whispered, cause I could barely speak. He nodded into my shoulder then lifted his head. His eyes were puffy, and his cheeks were raw and ruddy. He smiled his straight-toothed smiled and released.
"Ca-Can you do me a favour?" He asked, wiping his eyes. I nodded and smiled. Oh Boy I thought to myself.
"Come with us on tour. We need to catch up, I need to get to know you all over again." He suggested. I was shocked. I couldn't go, I had my job which I had been working so hard for...
"Ni...I can't! I have my job! Which I've been working so hard for and Gabby can't pay rent by herself and she's my best friend and-"
"She can come too. You can do your job from your computer! Please Bea, I need to have my sister with me and Greg needs to see you!" He begged. I thought he was going to drop to his knees and use puppy dog eyes...
"I'll have to talk with Gabby first, but i'll think about it. We have a month till you leave anyway..." I smiled, he smiled, we both smiled. Happy happy joy joy...right?
