The smell of Cozmel on my body was still there when I woke up. I went into the bathroom and yawned, gathering my clothes off the floor. I sniffed them, shrugged, and slid off the gown before sliding back into them. I walked downstairs and found Jeremiah and Damarco chatting in the front room. They stopped talking when I walked up.
"I heard you screaming last night." Jeremiah said. "Are you all right? Your nightmares aren't back, are they."
I just shook my head. "I really don't want to talk about it. Do you happen to have a backpack laying around here that I can use?"
"Yes. Damarco, reach in that closet behind you and pull one out."
Damarco nodded and went to the closet. He reemerged with a black backpack which he handed to me. I stuffed in my neatly folded nightgown.
"Did you have a visitor last night?" Jeremiah asked.
"I don't know what you're talking about." I told him.
"Oh, I think you do. You didn't have that dress when you walked in and you certainly didn't find it here. Too much material for this house."
"Thank you for letting us stay Jer. "I kissed Jeremiah on each cheek. "We have a long drive. Come on Damarco."
After we were in the car and on our way, Damarco finally decided to break the long silence between us.
"Where did you get da gown?" He asked me. I didn't answer him. "Aria?"
"Cozmel." I mumbled.
"Where?"
"Cozmel brought it to me. I... I had a nightmare and he came to me. He brought me something to sleep in."
He looked at me with a I-know-that's-not-all-that-happened look.
"What?" I said.
"Nothing. Nothing at al." He laughed.
"What?" I said again.
"Like I said. Nothing."
I rolled my eyes and turned on the radio. Damarco and I took turns driving and turns picking channels. When we finally reached Arkansas, we slept in the car. We asked around for Regina. As it turned out, no one liked her, but no one wanted to talk about her location either. We met a woman named Kandy who absolutely hated her. She took us right to the house was staying in.
"This is it." Kandy told us. "The bitches castle."
"Thank you." I said. "Is there anything we should know?"
"Yeah. Regina is fucking insane. All her dogs bite everyone they see. There are feral cats everywhere. It should be pretty easy to get into the house if you can get past all that, though."
"Okay. Thank you, again."
"Your welcome." Kandy said and left.
Damarco and I walked past the gate and looked around for biting dogs or feral cars. We saw a couple and I put them to sleep with my glamour. Be careful. The voice slid through my head and I smiled. We walked in through the front door and crept around the house. There were family pictures plastering the walls and beer cans and glitter covering the floor in the entrance hall. We stood on either side of a doorway in the middle of the hall and listened to the voices coming from within.
"...but she has one. I want one too!" A child's voice yelled.
"I'm sorry honey, but we just can't afford it right now." A man's voice said very calmly.
