Kael exited the small street and eventually stood at the dusty corner between the silently safe road occupied by two lovely aged people and on the edge of the bustling boulevard.
His light tundra eyes skimmed across all the bronzed faces of women, paying little attention to their jewelled necks and hair meticulously pulled back with brass bands. His ears twitched as he heard a faint bubbling laugh flit with the wind and whipped his head to find the source.
His eyes scrunched honing in on all the heads he could see, until he saw a shining silver clip resting high on a girls head and let his eyes travel down the silky smooth darkness until it met the crimson lined hood of the girl he was searching for.
He chuckled when he saw that she had yet again managed to find a patron to converse with. He watched her laughing while she threw her head back and made large gestures with her arms. He slowly shouldered his way to where she stood, seeing the humble lady to whom she spoke was a simple fruit seller, but Kere again treated her as though she was an equal.
As he neared, he shouted jollily to her; “Kere!” he watched amused as she suddenly froze and whizzed around to find her caller. When she saw him he could have sworn her face lit up like a beam of light as a huge smile graced her face.
“Kael!” she exclaimed. “I’ve been wondering where you ran off to!” she told him, laughing as she did so. She sidled up to him and threw her arms around his waist in a friendly embrace and he returned the gesture feeling lighter and happy due to her infectious mood. He smiled happily at her as she moved away and turned his brightened gaze on the small woman in front of them.
“And who might this be?” he inquired looking at Kere while gesturing to the woman. Kere’s hands flew to her mouth in shock and her eyes grew as wide as a full moon.
“Oh my! I completely forgot about you!” she said, staring at the girl who blushed looking away. “I’m so sorry!” she said in a rush.
The girl gave a small laugh with a voice as soft as the very breath she took.
“It’s quite alright Kere,” she said gently.
Kere suddenly looked slightly frustrated as her eyebrows began to furrow, “No, it is not! You’re just as important as anyone else. No treating yourself like you expect no respect, demand it!” she said in an explanatory huff. The girl lifted her petite hand stifling a laugh but could not hide the twinkle in her eye.
“As you say Kere,” she said now smiling. Kere crossed her arms with a childish squeak of protest.
Kere sighed and turned to Kael. “Well, this irking young woman is one of my newer friends, yet at times like these I feel as though our friendship has aged with time,” she said still in a fuss.
Kael could only chuckle as they both stuck their rose pink tongues out at each other. This caused them both to double over in girlish giggles while Kael was left bewildered by the bonds of this type of friendship.
Kere caught her breath but before she could speak the girl bowed her head slightly to Kael.
“My name is Marissa. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Kael,” she said softly while blushing, yet he heard every word.
He too tipped his head. “And yours Marissa,” Kael said with a small smile.
Kere’s hand shot forward and gripped Marissa’s cheek.
“Aww isn’t someone so cute!” she cooed causing Marissa to redden even more until she let her chocolate bob slide across her cheeks. Kere burst out laughing again until tears leaked from her eyes. All the while Marissa hopelessly tried to calm her flamed cheeks, shooting daggers at Kere’s vibrating frame.
