Surprise!

Chapter twenty two

Jackie's head shot up at what had come out of her daughter's mouth, "What? Sweetheart, I would love for that to happen, but you are going to have a baby and not to mention in a committed relationship with Narvel," she reasoned, sitting on the edge of the bed. 

"I know, but I feel like I can't breathe sometimes, like I am trapped in a tiny box and I can't go anywhere....Mama, I'm so scared of having this baby. I'm so scared that Narvel will cheat again and then leave. I do love him- don't get me wrong, but that fear is still there," Reba sighed, dabbing at the tears that threatened to fall. She hated feeling so insecure but also relieved that she had her mother here to help her through this.

"Reba, we can't always run away from our reality. This baby is going to need their Daddy, and taking them away from Narvel would destroy him. You two could have a bright future with this baby, you may not have much money but I do see a lot of love here and it makes me hopeful that this will work. You just have to push through and take it day-by-day, because, trust me, nothing will make you feel better than holding your baby for the first time and having the man you love next to you," Jackie stroked her hair back from her face and gave her a gentle smile. Reba looked down at her bump, letting out another sigh, then looking back up to Jackie. "You'll still be there for us, right?" making Jackie chuckle. "Of course. Who do you think is going to come to your rescue when that baby won't go to sleep and you are at your whits end?"

Narvel sat against the wall crying, having heard Reba's fears. He felt so helpless and frightened, but he'd be damned if he would let Reba move his child away from him. "God, help me," he plead, leaning his head against the wall.

After Jackie cooked them a nice meal, she cleaned up the house for them since neither on of them were capable of doing it themselves. Looking at the calendar she noticed that Reba had an appointment  approaching. Jackie hoped that they would take her off of bed rest, the baby seemed to be fine and Reba was holing up well so she didn't see any reason why they would keep her on. She was positive that Reba would be happy about that.

When she returned to Reba's bedroom to collect her dishes, she saw that Narvel was snuggled close beside herd, both of them asleep. She was almost going to wake him to keep Reba from getting sick when she noticed that he had covered his mouth and nose with his shirt to keep from spreading his illness. She knew then that he would be an amazing father and that his love for his family was true. Reba had nothing to worry about.
