Chapter 20: Lilah Force

I blinked twice until I could finally open my eyes. My eyelids felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. I found I had no energy to turn my head; my eyes could only move from side to side, which is what I did. I was in a light green room, with a little television on a table in the corner, a round wooden table with two blue, cushioned chairs and blinds covering the windows. Feeling a weight on my hand, I lowered my eyes to see Harry gripping my hand, his head resting on the white sheets of my bed, asleep.

That was when I realized it was probably night and I was in a hospital room. The lights in my room were dimmed; the overhead light was off but there were about four wall scones, giving the room a light golden colour. It was actually quite pretty, the hospital room looked very pleasant. I lay there for probably an hour, simply looking.

There were cords connected to my arms, leading to little plastic bags that hung from metal stands. I preferred to not know what those cords and bags were for. I began to feel a bit stronger, and I gently but slowly pulled my hand from Harry’s grasp. I placed my hand in his curls since his face was turned away from me and moved my fingers in them, feeling the softness. I lay there for what seemed like minutes but were really hours, thinking about everything that happened.

I felt Harry mumble and give a stir. I left my hand where it was, pressing the pads of my fingers gently into his scalp. He lifted his head, eyelids drooping, and looked at me. He frowned and blinked a few times, before all sleep was gone from his eyes. “Li! You’re awake!” he cried elatedly, sitting straight up and placing a hand on my cheek.

“Was I sleeping for long?” I asked, a bit puzzled.

His green eyes dimmed from their previous joy. “Two days,” he whispered. My eyebrows creased as I took in this information.

“Oh.” I didn’t really have much to say.

“But thank God you’re awake now,” he said, a small smile coming onto his face. He leaned forward and placed a long kiss on my cheek.

When Harry pulled away I examined his face. He had dark circles under his eyes and he was constantly blinking. “Harry, when last did you sleep?”

“Doesn’t matter love,” he said, avoiding my gaze.

“Harry. When last did you sleep?” I asked, emphasizing each word.

“Just now,” he murmured after a moment of silence,

My heart sank at the thought of him struggling to stay awake, waiting for me to open my eyes. I took his hand and held it tightly, sighing.

“I’m sorry sweetheart, but even if I wanted to go to sleep I wouldn’t be able to. How could I when you were like this?” he asked, a tender look coming into his eyes, making me manage a small smile.

“I’d better go get the doctor, now that you’re awake.” Harry gave me another kiss on the cheek before leaving the room. It wasn’t long until he came back with the doctor.

“Doctor Wilkins!” I said, surprised, since I was expecting a different doctor, one whom I didn’t know.

He gave me a wrinkled smile. “You never remember that I work in a hospital as well, Lilah.”

I turned a slight shade of pink. It was quite true, I always forgot.

“Have you found out what’s poisoning me?” I asked.

Immediately, the room suddenly felt colder. Harry’s eyes seemed to harden and Dr. Wilkins mouth was set in a grim line. “After collecting samples of your blood and testing it in the lab, we found arsenic.”
