Chapter 24: Safe

Kate gave a strangled cry and dropped to her knees, Avalon falling next to her. I couldn’t speak; my voice seemed to be gone. The nurse’s head shot up and she gave us an angry scowl. I watched as she continued pulling the sheet over Katie’s head, even though it was covered. Then she brought it back over Katie’s head and folded it so it lay on her chest.

Then the tall, skinny nurse came over to us and pushed us out the doorway before shutting the door behind her.

“Doctor Sharpe! Why did you let these girls into the room?!” she shouted, her voice harsh in my ears.

I turned to see the doctor who spoke to us earlier hurrying up, an angry look on his face. “I didn’t,” he said.

“The patient needs rest, and how can you expect her to get that if you want to burst into her room and cry all over the place,” the nurse castigated us.

“She’s – she’s not dead?” Kate asked, her voice thick.

The nurse and the doctor looked at each other in bewilderment. “Dead? Of course not! Whatever gave you that idea?” Doctor Sharpe asked.

“But – but you were pulling the sheet over Katie’s head!” Isabel stuttered.

The nurse laughed. “The sheet was a bit crumpled at the edge of the bed; I was simply pulling it free. She’s not dead!”

“Oh!” The girls and the boys all let out huge sighs of relief, before beginning to laugh at how stupid we were. Kate clutched Blake’s arm, giggling to herself.

“She is going to need a lot of rest, however,” the doctor said, after we’d all sobered up.

“Recovery will be long, but I can assure you, she is perfectly alright, all we have to do now is simply wait.” We all nodded at him, grins on our faces.

“You may see her tomorrow, now she needs to sleep. Surgery is an exhausting process for anyone,” she nurse said. “Rest assured she will be fine.” She gave us a warm smile, completely different from the scowl we received earlier, and hurried off.

After Kate asked the doctor a few more questions, we left the hospital. We would have liked to stay and wait until Katie woke up, but it was not allowed.

We all stood in a group, a bit unsure of what to do, until Liam finally suggested going back to their hotel and getting some sleep. As we piled into the bus, Roger heaved a sigh of relief. “I can’t tell you how scared I was for a while back there,” he admitted, running his hands through his hair.

I grinned. I always liked Roger because he seemed to know exactly how to handle Katie. If she decided to go hunting for one of her make believe animals, Roger would either go with her or reply with a ‘not now love’ and she would settle down and content herself with daydreaming.

“Oh! Could we stop at the hotel Harry and I stayed at? Our clothes and everything are still there,” I called to Liam, who was driving.

“Sure, where is it?”

Harry sat up by Liam to give him directions and we soon pulled into the parking lot. Harry and I went up to our rooms and I quickly threw my few belongings into my suitcase, which didn’t take long since I’d barely unpacked anyway. We checked out and hurried back into the bus.

Liam then drove to the resort and we all entered the room and simply all sprawled out on the ground and couches. We all spoke with relief for Katie, completely reassured and put at ease with the doctor’s earlier words. “So, Lilah, tell us about…” Avalon raised her eyebrows suggestively at me. All the girls began grinning and looking at us with strange smiles on their faces, except for the boys, who simply looked confused.
