Chapter Seven
When I came home, I immediately felt lonely. I knew I couldn't simply visit Leonard to vent about my mother or simply to talk. He was my friend and now it wasn't safe for me to visit him often. I also knew that my mother had probably already found out that Leonard was "Dead". I knew she would be here shortly and set about to make myself presentable, or rather, un-presentable. It wasn't hard to bring some tears to my eyes and trash my room a bit. I was genuinely sad and a bit angry. If it wasn't for my species, I could be Leonard's friend and not worry about hurting him.
Sure enough, within twenty minutes the was a knock on my door. I went to answer the door, but mother had already let herself in. She took one look at me and sighed. "You look dreadful, dear. What's happened?"
I wanted to pummel her for her feigned worry. "Mother, Leonard died this morning", I whimpered, quite convincingly if I do say so myself.
"I am sorry, Reaka, this is why you don't get attached to the prisoners", she tutted sadly," Where is his body? I'll take care of it so that you won't have to worry about it."
I sucked in a breath. Would she buy my lie? "I couldn't stand to look at him any longer and didn't want to trouble you, Mother. So I dropped his body into the sea myself."
Mother sighed. She looked annoyed, but not suspicious. "Reaka, you know I like to take care of these matters myself. Don't do it again."
I nodded meekly, the picture of a perfect daughter. "Yes, Mother." She looked at me sternly once more before leaving my room briskly.
I breathed a sigh of relief. I knew that there was still danger, but mother had no suspicions. We would always be in danger and I was happy that for now we were safe. I would be careful and hopefully mother would never find out about my deceit. The fact that I had never went against her commands would aid me.

It had been nearly two weeks since Leonard's escape and mother still had no suspicions. I had not fed in that time and knew that mother would knock on my door soon enough. It was not yet obvious that I had not fed. It usually took a few months for my body to age at all. When mother did notice, I knew she would be angry. I was lounging in my room, when a knock at my door sounded. I frowned. Mother never knocked, she just walked in whether she was invited or not. Usually, she was not.
I got up from the couch and walked warily towards the door. I opened the door and to my surprise my mother stood at the door grinning from ear to ear. I was immediately on my guard. Anything that made my mother that happy was not good. "Mother, what are you doing her?" I asked carefully.
"I just realized, dear, that you will be turning two hundred in less than a week. I have decided to give you a gift", she declared. Now, I was even more wary.
"Mother, you shouldn't have. What did you get me?" I asked, fearful of the answer.
"I got you a new pet, of course! I have noticed that you have not fed since poor Leonard's passing. I think that you will thank me. This one is particularly yummy." I flinched. Only my mother would think that a human man would be a suitable birthday gift.
"I'll leave you to get to know your new pet. He is in Leonard's old room. Tell me how it goes. Goodbye, dearie", said my mother as she left, far too cheery for my comfort.
I closed the door and sighed. I started mentally preparing myself for the loathing of a new human. I had had nearly one hundred and fifty years of hatred from humans for what I am before Leonard finally accepted me. I did not expect this human to be any different. I put on some nice clothes, brushed my teeth and hair, and put on a bit of makeup. Just because I expected hatred didn't mean I couldn't put a little effort in my appearance. I might as well look nice when first meeting him. After all, we will be together for a long time. As I finished, I made my way to the stairs. Who knows, Reaka, maybe he'll accept you like Leonard. I snorted. Yeah, Reaka, He'll fall in love with you, too.

Unknown POV
I awoke on a bed in an unfamiliar room surrounded by strangers. I looked at the one that was speaking. "You okay?" he asked me. I winced when I felt a throbbing pain come from my head.
"Why does my head hurt?" I asked.
"She must have knocked you out to bring you here," he said.
"Who?" I asked, but his attention was on a noise I couldn't hear. Everyone else in the room seemed to be listening, too. Everyone quickly left the room, almost trampling each other in their hurry.
The man that was speaking seemed eager to leave too, but before he left he said,"At least you get the nice one, mate. Good luck!"
Before I could ask what he meant, he was gone. I looked around the room. It looked lived in and I wondered if I had fainted on the ship and they didn't know who I was. I saw a flicker of movement in the door and turned toward the door. My mind immediately blanked. I never was good at talking with with attractive women and this one was beautiful. Her hair was as black as a moonless night it reached almost to her waist and her skin was as pale as the moon itself and without a blemish. She was tall, so tall that was I was only an inch or so taller and I was 6' 3". The most beautiful thing about her though were her eyes; her wide eyes were a deep royal purple with flecks of light blue within them. She must be the doctor. I stared a moment longer before I realized she was talking to me. I stared at her pink lips, not understanding a word she was saying. Finally, I came out of my stupor and I actually started to understand what she was saying.
"I'm afraid you'll have to stay here for a long time. I hope we can be friends, even if what I do is horrible." She smiled at me. She must be the doctor if she was worried about hurting me. Then I realized she was waiting on an answer.
"We'll be good friends", I said and smiled at her. Hopefully, I could convince her to be more than friends, I thought.
The woman seemed relieved at my answer. "What's your name?" she asked.
"My name is Haydin Fetter, ma'am", I answered, a little respect never hurt.
She blushed. "Nice to meet you, Haydin. My name is Reaka."
"A beautiful name for a beautiful lady", I said. No matter what anyone said flattery got me more places than I can count. She blushed again. Was she not used to compliments? I couldn't imagine that she wasn't with her beauty.
"What kind of music do you like, Haydin?" Reaka asked me. I winced.
"I don't really listen to music." Reaka looked shocked. She must really enjoy music.
"I will have to sing for you", she said.
"No, that's not necessary", I said hastily. I really liked this girl and I didn't want her to feel dumb.
"No, I insist!" she said firmly. She closed her eyes, opened her mouth, and began to sing Amazing Grace. I was alarmed when tears leaked out of the corners of her eyes. It was a few moments later she opened her eyes and looked at me. She stopped singing suddenly and stared at me, eyes wide.
"I don't understand", she said. I wondered what she was talking about. She started pacing. "Why isn't it working?" she asked herself.
"Um, what should be working, Reaka?" I asked. She looked at me again.
"You should have been entranced when I sang", she said, obviously confused. This girl must have thought she had a hell of a singing voice if she thought that I should have been entranced by it. "The only reason that it shouldn't have worked is if-", she cut herself off mid sentence. She whirled around to stare at me. "Please, answer me this honestly." I nodded my consent. "Are you deaf?" she asked me.
"Profoundly."
