Chapter Ten
It had been about a week since I had abandoned Haydin in his room. I felt bad, but she had not felt it was safe to visit him again. My thoughts were interrupted by my mother opening the door with such force that the doorknob slammed into the wall and broke the plaster. I was on high alert. I had never seen mother this angry before.
"Teach them to keep secrets from me!" Melaina screeched. I reeled how had she found out? "Reaka, come here!" her mother ordered. I complied coming out of my hiding place in the other room and coming into mother's view. "Reaka, have you fed on the man?"
"Yes, mother", I answered meekly.
"How? I must ask since I have found out that he is deaf!" Melaina screamed.
"He is deaf?" I asked, feigning disbelief.
"Yes, one of my men said that he had suspected it for a few days. He said that he acted as if he could not hear the men unless facing them." I was glad that Haydin had at least not been completely stupid and told one of Melaina's men in confidence. He had been found out by a particuarly smart man wanting favors from Melaina. "I am going to kill him now. I came to apoligize for my mistake and to promise you a new man soon", Melaina said. I was shocked that Melaina had even bothered to inform me of the impending death of Haydin, but didn't question it. I had been forewarned now and I would be able to save Haydin. As soon as Melaina left the room, I closed my eyes.
When I opened them, she saw Haydin backed against one wall. He regarded her as an animal regards another animal known to be a predator. She would have been sad, but they didn't have time. "We've been found out! If you value your life, you will take my hand and do as I say. As she spoke, she extended her hand toward Haydin. Haydin looked at her hand for a second and then seemed to make a decision. He gripped my hand and looked at me. "Think of someone you trust with your life. Close your eyes, think of their full name, their appearance, and then when you have them in your mind nod", I commanded.

Haydin POV
Who did I trust with my life? Immediately, My friend, Eric's, face popped into my mind. I closed my eyes. I thought of his full name Eric Lade Keynes. I thought of his brooding face, of his black hair, finally of his immense lanky tallness.
"Reaka, what in the name of the Goddess do you think you are doing?" I heard a voice scream. Before Reaka could answer, I nodded and I felt wind whoosh in my ears. Then everything was still, so still.
I opened my eyes and right in front of me was Eric. He looked horrible. His eyes had deep black rings underneath them, he looked like he had lost weight, and his already pale complexion looked nearly white. "Eric", I said and his eyes widened,"you look like crap." He stared at me.
"You're dead", he whispered. I flinched. Did everyone think I was dead? Of course they do idiot! I thought. You were on a boat and then you weren't. I looked at Eric.
"I'm not dead man, but I do need your help", I said. Then Eric did a strange thing, he sniffed the air and stiffened, and, before I could even wonder what was happening, he had his hand around Reaka's throat and had shoved her into a wall. The wall shook with the force. "Eric, what are you doing?" I yelled.
"Haydin", Eric said calmly,"I need you to move behind me slowly. This woman is dangerous."
"Like Hell, I will! Reaka helped me escape from that crazy woman", I said. Eric turned back to Reaka and she nodded, nodded again, and then shook her head. I couldn't see what he was asking her because he was faced away from me. He released her and she slid down the wall, gasping for breath. Eric faced me and I stepped back, shocked. My best friend had red eyes.
"Haydin, what was that woman's name?" I stared at Eric.
"Haydin!" shouted Eric. I flinched.
"Melaina, her name was Melaina." Eric hissed, actually hissed, and I saw a flash of long teeth, longer than they should have been. I was confused. Who was that? Where was Eric?

Reaka POV
I was not expecting in my wildest dreams to be shoved into a wall with a hand gripping tightly to my throat. What was even more surprising was that when I tried to struggle, he spoke to me in a low voice. "Siren, if you try to sing, I will snap your neck like a twig", the man said with a deadly promise. No, not a man I realized. A man would not be this strong, a man would not know what I was, and most of all a man would not be sporting fangs and bloodred eyes. I stilled. The vampire did not relax his grip. "Haydin, I need you to move behind me slowly. This woman is dangerous."
"Like Hell, I will! Reaka helped me escape from that crazy woman", said Haydin and I smiled. I was happy that Haydin was refusing to back down.
The vampire turned back to me. "Did you help him escape?" I nodded. "Are Haydin and you in danger?" I nodded again. "Did you feed on him?" I shook my head. He released my neck and I slid down the wall. I gasped for air. I had never been that close to death. I had never even been in danger. He had released me, but I knew that, if I moved to quickly, his hand would find it's way back to my throat. "Haydin, what was that woman's name?" the vampire asked. "Haydin!" he shouted.
"Melaina, her name was Melaina", I heard Haydin say shakily. I felt sorry for him. He obviously had no idea that his friend was a vampire. The vampire hissed. I knew that my mother's name was well known, but now I knew it was also hated. The vampire knelt next to me.
"What is your relation to Melaina?"
"Daughter", I managed to gasp out. He hissed.
"I don't trust you, but you did save Haydin. I will allow you to explain."
