Chapter Nineteen

It was a few days after everyone's tense conversation that I got a frantic phone call from Leonard. I had gotten a phone a few months ago, when Leonard complained I didn't visit enough. Gemma had suggested I get a cell phone so that I could call Leonard.

"Hey, Leonard, have I got some news-"

"Reaka, I have to warn you!" Leonard cut me off. I was stunned speechless. Leonard hadn't ever cut anyone off.

"What about?" I asked. His voice sounded freaked out and it made me immediately edgy.

"There is someone after you! A man came to my house and he knew you!"

"A man?" I asked incredulously. "What is so special about a man?"

"Nothing, until he said that he was hunting you and then disapeared!" Leonard shouted.

I felt my blood run cold. The only people who hunted Aikoade and disapeared where male Aikoade and that meant that mother finally had called an assasin. I knew it was only a matter of time before he found me. Only a matter of time before he killed me. "How long?" I asked. My voice was hollow.

"He said he'd take a break for an hour. After that, I don't know."

So I had an hour at least. It was time to say goodbye. I refused to run. I didn't want that life. I knew by choosing not to run I was choosing to die. "Leonard, I have to go." It hurt to act like I was going to see him again, but I didn't want him to worry. "Goodbye, Leonard," I said. My voice almost cracked, but I kept it out of my voice somehow.

"Goodbye, Reaka. If I don't see you again, I need you to know that I love you like a daughter."

At that, tears fell. A lump formed in my throat. "Love you," I managed to choke out. I hung up and stared at the phone. I only loved a few people. My sister, Leonard, and Haydin. Haydin? Where had that come from? But as soon as I thought it, I knew it was true. The way he wasn't afraid of me, the way his grey eyes searched mine, the way he had protected me from Eric, the way his hugs calmed me down, and finally the way that I couldn't hurt him. He was perfect for me. Suddenly, I had to see him.
