Chapter Eight
I stared at Haydin, not wanting to believe what I just heard. What the heck am I supposed to do with a deaf person? He looked at me confused and a little scared. "I have to go", I said suddenly. I ran out of the room and went to mine. What am I supposed to do? I can't tell mother. She would kill him; she had no use for a deaf human. We were only able to steal life from a hearing person. I needed to rant. It was dangerous, but I needed to talk to Leonard. I closed my eyes.
When I opened my eyes, I was standing on Leonard's porch. I rang the doorbell. For a long moment, no one answered and I began to panic. My fears were unfounded, however, when the door opened slowly. Gemma stood in the door looking a bit wary. I sighed, it seemed I was known. "I'm just here to talk." Gemma opened the door more and gestured for me to enter.
"Daddy, the siren is here", she yelled. I flinched. I hated how she didn't say my name almost as much as I hated the name siren.
Leonard appeared in the entryway. He smiled broadly. "Reaka, I didn't expect to see you for a while." I frowned and his smile dimmed. He looked at me nervously as he saw my grim expression. "Have we been found out?" he asked.
"No, but I'm afraid it might be even more serious", I said, "I might want your families advice, too. I need a lot of ideas." He grimaced, knowing I didn't ask for help lightly.
"What's happened that is so bad?" I heard Gemma ask from behind me.
"I will tell, but I would like to tell everyone at one time, if you don't mind, Gemma." She nodded in agreement.
"I'll go round everyone up. You and Daddy can go into the family room", she said, as she left. Leonard led me through the house.
"How have you been, Leonard? I'm sorry I didn't ask, but I'm a really concerned." Leonard grinned.
"Well, at first they didn't believe me, but I think Carol won them over with your disappearing act." I smiled.
"Sorry about that. Was she okay?" I asked.
"She told me she almost fainted, but she was very convinced." We were in the family room now and I heard footsteps behind us. I stood near the fireplace, as everyone filed into the room. Everyone was quiet and looked at me a little distrustful, except for Leonard, of course. I waited until everyone was seated before I started talking.
"I have a huge problem", I stated. Leonard looked at me thoughtfully, probably wondering what could make me so worried.
"What is the problem, Reaka?" he asked.
"Mother brought me a deaf human," I stated.
The silence was deafening. Leonard was the only one that knew how serous this was and the others were trying to figure out the problem. Finally, Leonard recovered. "Does your mother know yet?"
"No, he just arrived today", I replied.
"Can he be fixed?" asked Leonard.
"I wish! He is completely deaf. He doesn"t even wear hearing aids," I exclaimed.
"How did your mother not know? She speaks to you before kidnapping you. She would know, if he didn't understand," he said. Everyone was listening to our conversation, slowly realizing the serious situation.
"He can read lips. I didn't even notice that he couldn't hear until I tried to sing! Aren't deaf people supposed to have some sort of accent?" By this time, I was in full freak out mode.
"Reaka, calm down. Your mother doesn't know yet. How long can you stall her probably?" Leonard asked.
"A week, maybe." I said hesitantly. I really wasn't sure.
"Reaka, can you just do what you did with Daddy?" asked Gemma.
"No, I can't. I lied and told mother that Leonard had died. This man, he's too young; he can't be older than mid-twenties.", I said sadly.
"What will happen to the young man if your mother finds him out?" asked the man that had come in with Gemma.
"I'm sorry, but I didn't catch your name?"
"Andrew Delov" he said politely.
"Well, Andrew, I'm afraid that ,if mother found out about his condition, his fate would be death", I said. Everyone stilled at this shocking news. I knew that they thought he would simply stay in the prison. "She has no use for useless prisoners and he would be taking an available cell", I said bitterly.
"There is always one radical choice", said Carol quietly. I looked at her hopefully. "You could always help him and then yourself escape. You could protect him; couldn't you?" Carol asked. I felt shocked. Could I do that? I had never thought about it and I suddenly realized I was under my mother's influence more than I had realized. The idea had never even occurred to me to leave.
"Where would I go?" I asked the question that had always burned in my mind since the day I realized my mother had never loved me and never would. I was simply a pawn.
"Anywhere you would like. You can teleport, can you not?" asked Carol sensibly,"If you felt she was chasing you, you would just go to another place." I felt suddenly defenseless, because I knew that I would probably have to do just that. I would have to run. Now that Leonard had shown me the kinder side of humanity, I refused to take a life ever again.
