Chapter Fifteen

Not one word was said on the fifteen minute back to the apartment where Andre and Mia lived. When we reached the apartment, Mia tried to open the door and found that it was locked. I heard Mia say something along the lines that Andre was grounded until he was forty. He wasn't supposed to leave the apartment, but I was secretly glad that he wasn't here. I knew he was aware that Aikoade existed, but I wasn't sure about vampires or other Supernaturals and it would take too long to explain. 

 After a few minutes, we were all seated around Mia's dining room table. Haydin looked hesitantly at Mia. "She knows about us," I said. I didn't mention that she was an Aikoade. It was her secret to tell not mine.  

  Haydin nodded then began speaking. "So how have you been, Reaka?" he asked me almost shyly.

  "I've not fed, if that's what you mean," I snapped.

  Haydin recoiled and then sighed. "That's not what I meant, Reaka. You disappeared right in front of me. I was afraid you had gone back to Melaina. I missed you, a lot!" I wasn't quite sure how to respond to that. I hadn't had many people worry about me. Haydin's grey eyes stared at me, waiting for my answer. They lingered on my lips. I suddenly felt a bit uncomfortable.

 Before I could even think about answering, Mia's door flew off it's hinges. Shocked, we all gaped at the doorway. Haydin came close to me and subtly put his hand in mine. When the smoke cleared, I saw a figure I never thought I'd ever see again and he looked furious. Eric stood in the doorway with his fangs bared. I was momentarily frightened because he looked so angry. Then, I noticed that he wasn't looking at me. I followed his line of vision and was surprised to find a very scared, pale looking Mia. Her eyes were wide and her mouth was in a frightened grimace. She recognized him I realized. Eric obviously thought he recognized Mia too. "Maya!" he snarled. 

 Haydin looked surprised all of a sudden and looked at Mia-Maya with sudden wariness. I was confused as to why they all knew Mia as Maya but I was not about to let either of them hurt my friend. I stepped in front of Mia-Maya calmly. She looked at me solomnely. "Thank you," she whispered.

"You have a lot of explaining to do," I muttered and she nodded in agreement.

 "It's nice to see you again, Eric," Mia said.

  "I can't say the same, Maya," Eric spat angrily. I saw hurt flash through Mia's eyes. "Why did you do it?" asked Eric his angry voice tinged with a deep sadness.

  "I'm so sorry, Eric," Mia said. I saw Eric's muscles bunch and I knew that he was about to attack. I crouched defensively. Eric's eyes flicked to me for a brief moment but seemed to dismiss me almost immediately. I wondered why briefly before I was suddenly yanked to the side. I found myself restrained in Haydin's arms. Curse this boy! I had forgotten about him. I struggled against him, but I could not get out. Aikoade were essentially human, no super strength for us. 

 "I am going to kill you, Maya," said Eric calmly.

  Mia's face was serene. "I will not hurt you, Eric." she replied.

  Eric crouched and I struggled against Haydin again. "Stop," Haydin commanded me", You don't know what she has done against Eric. You're not safe," he sounded concerned for my safety. I looked back at Eric just in time to see him launch himself at Mia. I looked in fear for Mia. She was not there. Eric whirled around, looking for Mia.

  "I didn't do it, Eric," said Mia. Eric twisted to face Mia. He snarled as he attacked Mia again. She disappeared and then appeared again a few feet behind Eric. "I loved Thomas. I would never hurt him!" she said. Eric whirled around.

 "What the Hell!"  I heard a voice say.

  I turned toward the voice. Andre! "Andre, get out of here!" I yelled.

  Andre took one look at me restrained, his mother being attacked, and then did the unthinkable. His eyes glowed red, his canines extended, and he snarled. Mia paused and looked at Andre and seemed to bask in his ferocity. She paused a bit too long. Eric tackled her to the floor. She hit the floor with a thump. "Mom," Andre yelled. Then, Andre launched himself at Eric. 

 They fought so ferociously that I winced with all the punches and snapping teeth. Andre had the upper hand. No, Eric did. The fight seemed to last forever, but was probably only a minute or two. "Stop!" screamed Mia.

  Andre and Eric started to circle each other slowly. "I have no fight with you, boy," said Eric.

  Andre hissed. "You made it my fight when you attacked my mom," he said.

  Eric stilled suddenly. He looked at Andre incredulously. His eyes widened suddenly. He looked at Mia. "He looks like Thomas," he whispered.

  Mia's eyes filled with tears. "Andre," said Mia. Andre looked at his mother. "Andre, meet Eric, your uncle." She turned her gaze toward Eric, who had gone stock still and whose eyes had returned to hazel. "Eric, meet Andre, your nephew."

 The two men regarded each other for the first time, as family.
