"Just walk in, breathe, and say Hi." Madi's encouraging words moved me to touch the handle of the door.
"I'll just be hanging out in the car." She gave me a warm hug and started heading towards the main entrance.
'Breathe, Claire, breathe.' I took a deep breathe as I opened the door. I saw him in his hospital clothes sitting up in the bed watching some show on the tv that was hanging on the wall. I stood there frozen by the door, not really knowing how to approch him.
"H-hi." My voice cracked as I sat down in the chair next to the door. Louis turned his head towards me, smiling. He was smiling, at me. But what for? Sure I came, but its not like he could ever really proccess a thought of me. I heard the click of the tv going off.
"Come over here." He patted the bed and scotted over a bit making a spot for me. I hesitated but got up and soon found myself sitting next to him. We weren't cuddling, it was just a simple sit down and talk with a friend.
"So, um. What have you been doing these last four months?" He was trying to make a conversation even though he knew the answer. I'll just tell him the things that he doesn't know.
"School. Went back to college to work on my teachers degree."
"Sounds fun. What kind of teacher are you going to be? Sorry, I put that in a weird way, I meant what grade and subject. ?" He titlted his head.
"High School and I want to be a choir director. Right now I have a part-time job working at a middle school for this great choir teacher. I'm his assistant and the kids are great!"
"That's awesome. Anything else?" I shook my head. I didn't do much but school and come here.
"I want us to be friends. Right now everything is just so," he couldn't find the word "confusing?" I said. "Yes, I remember everything. But when I look at you all I see is this beautiful stranger, that I am just dying to meet." He still had that sweet personality that I had clearly missed.
"Louis, its fine. Honestly, you seem happy. I don't need to drag you down with all my drama. I'm the bad ex." I laughed, but my words were true.
"Ex. What do you mean? I thought we were friends?" His face changed to a total confused look.
"Its complicated. First we were best friends, then we dated for a few months, then we broke up and on the night that you got shot you were going to ask me out again." I chuckled at the memory of our complicated, but lovely realationship.
"I remember all of this, but I just never see your face. Its always somebody else's face. I feel terrible for not remembering you." He started to frown.
"Its okay, Louis. You'll get through this." I didn't know if I was suppose to give him a hug, or shake his hand or even touch his shoulder. My thoughts were pulled away as Louis wrapped his arms around me engulfing me into a big hug.
"I want to get through this with you. If that's okay." I could feel his warm breath against my neck.
"I'd be fine with that." and the truth was, I really was fine. It would hurt for a long time knowing that we'd never have the life we used to have but the one thing that was keeping me sane right now was seeing him healthy.
"Just go to the fax room and copy a bit more of this song." Mr. Jennings handed me a copy of 'Carol Of The Bells' I turned on my heel walking out of the double doors heading down the hall way making a right and going through another pair of doors. As I reached the fax room I handed Mrs. White the copy and told her to print off exactly 65 copies. I always waited in the Teachers Lounge while I waited until Mrs. White was done.
I started the coffee machine pouring a cup for Mr. J and making some Peppermint tea for myself. I grabbed a few sugar packets, two straws, and a little thing of cream for Mr. J's coffee. I felt a gentle hand place on my shoulder. I turned around to see these mesmerizing hazel eyes staring back at me. I was stunned at this mans beauty. He chuckled at I realized I was staring.
"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. Am I standing in your way?" I moved away from the microwave that had a minute left for my tea. They never had my tea at the school so I always had to bring my own box and keep it safely hidden in the choir room.
"No, I just needed to use the microwave so I was just going to ask you, if you were done with it." He smiled this beautiful smile. His hair was this crazy dark chocolate brown and his skin tone was fare, but had a tint of tan in it.
The microwave beeped leading me to open the little door and grabbing the cup and totally forgetting how hot it was going to be.
"AWWWWWW!!" I didn't mean to yell but it hurt SO much! He quickly grabbed my wrist trying not to touch my hands. He ran me over to the sink and placed my hands under the freezing water. I stood there dumbfound that he did that. Most people would just stand there and continue on with their lives while I rushed myself over to the sink.
"Thank you." I smiled as I continued to let my hands feel the cool water. He nodded and walked over to the microwave. I turned my head around to see him grabbing a small towel and taking my tea out. He placed it on the counter quickly put his lunch in and began to wipe down the counter.
"Thank you." I said again.
"It's no big deal, really. I couldn't stand there and watch you burn yourself to death." A smile spread across his face.
"What's your name?" I asked and my poor southern accent came out. You'd think since I lived it London for over a year that it'd be gone and I would magically have this crazy British accent. Nope, that was a complete lie.
"It's Noah, and I can tell you're not from around here." He tried to mimic my voice but couldn't do it because his original accent took over.
"I was born and raised in Texas, moved to LA for my first adult years and then moved here for my job." I turned off the water looking at my red hands that would soon be covered in blisters.
Noah handed me a towel to wipe my hands off with.
"So what subject do you teach, I've never seen you around here, before?" I fixed my black skirt before sitting down. Noah sat down beside me holding his leg and resting it on his knee. The casual guy sitting pose. I simply crossed my legs trying to remain as cool as possible.
"My mum works here and I just came for a visit. She teaches 8th grade. Mrs. Sea." I nodded as I had remembered the plump lady. He did resemble her in some ways.
"What do you teach?" He asked with such kind eyes. "I don't teach, I'm just an assistant for Mr. Jennings although I am going to college to teach choir." He nodded. As if ruining the moment Mrs. White came in handing me the copies.
"Guess I should get going. Thanks for saving my hands today." I laughed as I grabbed the two cups and my other things.
"No problem at all." He opened the door for me but grabbed my elbow before I could leave. "I don't think I ever got your name." I smiled
"Its Claire. Claire Bird."
