I began to weep quietly in the gas station bathroom. I can't be? how can I be? I was so careful. oh god, I can't do this. how am I going to know? "
I stepped out of the stall and wiped away the running makeup that melted away under my teary eyes.
"Welcome home, beautiful." Noah walked up to me and took the groceries from my hands. I gave him a quick kiss, we both walked over to the kitchen to put away the stuff from the store.
"How was your day at work?" I sat down at the table as I watched him put away the rest.
"It was fine. How was yours?"
"Ehhhh, same old, same old. I've been thinking about doing something else. Maybe just working a side job."
"Oh, why's that?" He sat down
"I don't know, maybe if when we decide to start a family, I can be at home and work a little for extra cash."
"That sounds like a good idea." Noah kissed my cheek. "Do you want to try for kids?"
"Well, that's the thing Noah." I bit my lip.
"No. Really!?" Noah got up and pulled me into a hug.
"Yeah." I chuckled and kissed Noah.
"Oh wow! This is great, Claire."
"I've got to go meet up with my boss but when I get home, we are celebrating. " Noah kissed my forehead and walked out of the apartment.
I placed my hands in my head and sighed. I pulled my phone out and began to dial the number.
It rang and rang before someone finally answered.
"Hello?" a girl answered.
"Um, hi this is, Claire Bird. I was wondering if-" there was a few hushed words on the other line before a boy began to speak.
"Claire, is everything okay? I thought we vowed not to talk to each other unless you were in need of help?" I heard a door close and he spoke up.
"That's the problem, Kyle." I bit my lip because I haven't spoken to him since Will passed.
Kyle sighed and I could picture him shuffling around the room or playing with his hair. It was a habit of his that I didn't know if he still did.
"Explain."
"I'm pregnant." Kyle gasped and then laughed.
"Okay, and? I thought you always wanted to have kids?"
"I do. I just don't know who's it is."
"You are fucking with me." Kyle laughed. He was always like this. If he couldn't take a situation seriously he would get nervous and laugh.
"No, really. Its complicated. I just need somebody to talk to. "
"I mean, what the hell, Claire?! I wish I could fly out to see you but your like in what? England? and I'm all the way in Washington state. I don't have the kind of money to fly out and help you, babe."
"But I do and I need you here, Kyle." I tried to hold back my tears. I was so lost and upset.
"Okay. I'll start packing. You owe me."
"Oh thank you, Kyle! Most certainly."
"I'll have to talk to, Grace."
"Oh, is that the girl who was on before?"
"Yeah. She's just someone I hook up with every now and then." He laughed quietly.
"I'll, um, message you when I've got your ticket ready."
" Alright and, Claire, next time make sure not to call me at 4 am."
"Oh, yeah. Sorry." I laughed quietly.
"Good night, Claire."
"Night, Kyle." he hung up and I moved over to the computer to get things going.
