"Go Savvy! You have got this buddy!" Ashton encourages our soon. I clap for Savvy. He finally gets to run the football. He is so close to the end. I stand up and scream. "Oh my gosh. He is fixing to get a touch down!" Ashton looks at me and says. I smile and continue clapping. "Go Savvy!" I blurt. He runs past the line. "Touch Down!" The announcers yell. The buzzer beeps. We all jump up and down, not realizing the boys tackled him. They all unpile and he lays there. He isn't getting up. Ashton jets down the stairs and onto the field. I am right behind him. "What happened?" I asks. "My leg. It hurts so bad, Mommy." Savvy says. Ashton picks up the crying 7 year old and rushes him to the side lines. "Coach, he said his leg hurts really bad. I'm taking him to the hospital." Ashton says. We take him and put him in the car and rush to the hospital.
Once we are there, Ashton gathers the hurt boy in his arms. "He hurt his leg at a football game. I want it x-rayed." I tell the front desk. They get us right back and put him on the x-ray machine. The technician clicks the button a few times then moves his legs to a different position. She finishes with her set of x-rays. "Okay, I'll have to process these and them let you know. For now, let put you in a room." We wait for about 15 minutes, then we hear a knock on the door.
Ashton stands up and shakes the doctors hand. "So we've got some bad new here buddy." The doctor moves to Savvy. "It looks like you won't be playing football for 6 months." He starts to cry. "Its broken." He looks at me and says. "We need to get it in a cast now." He tells Savvy. "What color cast do you want?" The doctor asks. "Red." He studders because of the crying. "Why do you want red?" The doctor is trying to get him off the thought of not playing football. "Its my daddy's favorite color." Savvy smiles at Ashton. Ashton's lips turn into a smile.
They take Savvy to the casting room and get him all set up to start the wrapping. They begin to wrap his foot and he winces at the pain. "Daddy, come sit with me." Savvy tells Ashton. He complies to the hurt boy. "It kind of hurts. But I am a big boy." I can't help but to smile at the sight of the father-son bonding. They finish the cast and want him to walk around on it for a minute. He wobbles around in the room almost in tears. "That's good enough." The doctor says. "He is all set to go. We will set him up with a bone doctor. He will take better care of it." Savvy nods and thanks the doctor for helping him with his broke leg.
Savvy tries to walk to the car on his own having to stop for a break. He complained the cast was to heavy to walk with. He eventually made it to the car. "Can we go back to the game? My team is counting on me to be there." Ashton laughs. "You can't play football, remember?" Savvy tells him he remembers and that he just wants to support them. We drive back to the field and his teammates all run and hug him. "Savvy!", "We are so happy you are okay!", "Can I sign your cast?". All the kids are talking. Savvy is enjoying the attention. Ashton and I just stand back and look at our tough little footballer. I look at Ashton and he smiles. He leans down and kisses me. "This time next year, he will be back on the field." I laugh. "We will see about that."
