Chapter 24: Love Doesn't Exist

You can always tell when Halloween was here because of the fact that the school begins decorating. It's a week before and already the hallways have jack-o-lanterns scattered around, ghosts put up everywhere, banners that say boo, and the teachers are beginning to dress up. Usually Sophie and I chill at my house, watching scary movies, and handing out candy to little kids that come to our house. This year, I feel like the boys are going to make us do something that I don't know would be a good idea.

Sophie and I were walking to the cafeteria, when the boys came up, grabbed our hands and dragged us outside the school. Something told me we were skipping. I've missed so much school this year, I don't know how my teachers haven't called my parents. Honestly, we're only skipping fifth period but it seems to me I'm always skipping that class. I'm so grateful she doesn't check attendance.

"What is going on?" Sophie whines. I know she hates skipping but arguing with the boys is basically arguing with a brick wall, you don't get anywhere.

"Well Halloween is close," Asher remarks.

"And we're invited to a party," Beau adds in.

"So we have to get costumes," Nolan finishes.

We all look at Alec, expecting him to add something but he just pounds his fist in the air, very weakly.

"So we're skipping so you guys can get costumes?" I ask, a bit annoyed.

"Basically," Asher says, throwing his arms over my shoulders and pulling me in the car, "Let's go."

We have a giant superstore that is only for the holidays. So whenever the holidays get close, the store opens with all the stuff for that holiday. It's pretty far to drive to but it looks like a giant mall. We see it in the far distance before we even get close. I always forget that the guys are new to this town so they look in awe as we approach while Sophie and I just shrug it off, we've been here almost all our life.

The building has a giant pumpkin on it that flashes on and off, in honor of Halloween. Inside, there are cobwebs covering every corner, ghosts hanging above. There are standing witches that cackle and speak when you pass by them. The costumes are on the second floor but the escalators are covered in red, making it look like blood is flowing down. They sure go over and above for this.

The guys had to take selfies with the standing witches while Sophie and I waited for them to finish. We eventually made it to the escalator and made it up to the costumes. Remember in the cartoons when the cartoon's eyes would go really big and pop out of their head? Well, that's how the boys looked, minus the eyes popping out of the head. There were so many costumes for them to decide from. They wanted a group costume but couldn't find anything that interested them.

We ended up leaving empty handed, heading home was especially depressing because I knew my parents would be home. The surgery went well, she needs to have some chemo to kill the remaining ones they couldn't remove, but overall, it seemed to look good. Now that mom was better, I knew dad was going to push the divorce now, he wanted it to be official as soon as possible.

Getting home, I heard the yelling coming from the living room, isn't it great to be home?

"Jacky I told you I'd stick with you through thick and thin and I did! The divorce is going to be final in December anyway!" My dad shouted.

"You can't do that to Evie, Mark! She knows about the divorce but maybe we can try to make it work!"

"We can't! I don't love you anymore Jacky!" He says, I feel my mom's heart breaking, "Our love died a long time ago."

"Mark, you don't mean that."

"But I do," he tells her, "I don't see a future with you anymore, not like with her."

"And what about Evie?"

"What about her? I'll see her weekends, or vacations, depending on if we're moving to New York or not."

"You're abandoning her!"

"No I'm not! It's selfish of both of you to force me to be in a relationship I don't want to be in!"

"Please Mark..."

I can feel him shaking his head, "Jacky, once upon a time ago, you were my one true love, but eventually, all love dies, and ours has reached its expiration date."

He walks out the living room to see me. I stand there, staring at him, not able to speak. His face softens and he reaches out to me, his bags are packed by the front door, he's ready. I pull away from his reach and stare at the ground. When young, we always believe in love because we see how in love our parents are. But when we become older, we see how fractured it really is and how much love doesn't exist. I realized that today; love is a lie we tell to make ourselves feel better about life.

"Evie-"

"Leave," I say, through gritted teeth. I fight back the tears, I won't cry.

"Please honey understand-"

"That love doesn't exist," I remark, "I just learned that. So dad, enjoy your new slut of a girl, her expiration date will come soon too."

With that said, I go up the stairs. I slam the bedroom door and notice the photo automatically. It's a Polaroid photo of my mom, dad and me. We were in Florida, on the beach, smiles lighting up our face. Mom was wearing a stripped long dress, dad was wearing a polo shirt and shorts, while I was wearing a crop top and shorts. That was the year before life turned crap.

I don't think, I act. I grab the picture frame and before I know, I threw it against the wall and let it shatter. I don't even think about it but instead crawl into bed, cowering under the covers.
