One day, as I was doing the laundry, my mom approached me in her wheelchair.
Her face was still the face I used to know. I felt guilty. If I hadn’t disobeyed them, if I hadn’t turned away from Engineering, they would’ve been living a comfortable life now. I could’ve given them the life of comfort. But I chose differently. I was selfish.
“Four more days and it’ll be your birthday,” my mom said as she watches me hang the clothes to dry.
“It is? I kept losing track of time,” I answered.
“You don’t have to hide anything from me. I know something’s bothering you,” my mom said.
“Bothering? No, Ma. I’m fine,” I answered, trying hard to keep myself together.
“You have to remember what your father always tells you and your brother,” she said.
“Don’t hide behind smiles and pretences. It’ll be like torturing yourself. Therefore the only person hurting you is yourself,” then she went inside and the backyard door closes behind her.
Those words made me realize things. I slowly dropped down on my knees and I just can’t help myself. Tears came rushing out of my eyes, it was unstoppable.
Now I know how much he means to me now. And if this is the price I had to pay for growing attached to something as fragile as the relation we had, then I deserve all this. All this and more.
I felt someone’s hand on my shoulder. It was warm and comforting. I turned to look.
It wasn’t him.
“The postman arrived just now.” My brother said.
“What’s the point? There’s no letter for me anyway,” I said.
“He’s right outside the house,” my brother said. I looked at him, shocked.
“A letter arrived for you. From Korea,” he said.
I immediately stood up and went to the front yard. The postman was right outside the house, a letter in his hand.
I eagerly took the letter from him and opened it. I almost cried again. I almost jump out of joy. I almost faint.
The letter had my name on it and Wonwoo’s name on the sender box.
But there was nothing written inside.
An empty letter.
No words.
Nothing.
