“Phil. Phil. Phil. Philllllllllllll.”
“What!?” I knew I shouldn’t have answered the phone.
“Phil. Can we please stay in England a bit longer? Like...a month? PLEASEEEEEEEEE?”
“What? No, Dan! I need to see Ashley!”
“Oh yeah. About that...you can’t talk to Ashley anymore.”
“WHAT!?” I was already mad at my brother for being stupid, and now this? “Why do you say that, Dan?”
“Just trust me. Bad things will happen otherwise.” He sounds like he’s joking, but why would he be that cruel?
“Yeah, right Dan. I gotta go. We’re going-”
“No, Phil!” He makes his voice sound a bit more serious. “Please. She asked me to tell you. She’s totally fine, but you can’t talk to her until we get back. Which will be later...”
“No, Dan.” I can hear the sadness in my own voice. “I can’t do that. We have to go home on time. And I’m calling her. So don’t ask me again. I just can’t.” I don’t want to add even more scars. “Bye!”
“No Phil Wai-” I hang up and dial Ashley’s house number.
“Shhhhh. Hello?” Ashley answers the phone, but sounds stressed.
“Hey Ashley I-”
“I thought I told you to-! I mean...I can’t talk right now.”
“But I-”
“I’m sorry. I just can’t.” I hear whispering near the phone, but I can’t make out the words.
“Ashley, I miss you. A lot. And what was Dan-”
“I hate to do this, but-” Her voice cracks, and there is a loud crash. I can tell she is holding back a whimper. “I think we should see other people.” I open my mouth to protest, but don’t get the chance. “I’m really sorry. it just-I don’t think it would work out. Bye. Um...you should stay over there now. I’ll send your stuff. Bye!” I hear another crash, Ashley starts to cry, and the line goes dead.
