I hate having to lie to him like this. Luckily, Phil fell asleep about an hour ago. I don’t know if I can act this much longer, even if it IS to save his life. I play with my phone in my pocket, turning it in my hand. I can’t turn it on, but it makes me feel better just holding it. “Ma’am, we’re going to land soon. Would you mind waking up your friend? Thanks!” the stewardess continues down the aisle, and I shake Phil lightly. He must not have been too deeply asleep, because he wakes up immediately, eyes springing open. When he looks at me, his eyes from sadness. This is breaking my heart.
I continue with my stupid face, not looking at him directly in the eyes. “The airplane lady said we’re landing.” I look away, biting my lip, my tears aching to spill out.
“Alright. When we get off, just follow me, Ok? I’ll take you to my house and we’ll hide out there.” He sighs, sounding disappointed.
Phil drags me through the airport, obviously annoyed with his sagging pants. He pulls out his phone and makes a quick call, still struggling through the building. “Hey Emma. Before you say anything, I’m cashing in my favor. I need to stay at your house. You still have an extra room, right?” He pauses, waiting for a reply. “Awesome. I’ll explain more when I get there. See ya in a bit.” He hangs up the phone and turns to me. “We’re going to stay with a friend of mine. Her name is Emma, Ok?” I know exactly who Emma Blackery is, but Phil thinks I have no memory, so I just go along with the act, nodding.
~Later~
“I got it mum!” Emma opens the door, letting us in. “Hey Phil. What’s-” he pushes past her, pulling me roughly through the door and slamming it.
“You remember Ashley, right?” Phil gestures to me, and I wave, acting as if nothing is wrong. Emma nods. “She doesn’t remember you, so don’t be offended. I’ll explain later, just-thanks for letting us stay. I appreciate it.” He awkwardly gives Emma a hug, towering over almost half her size.
“Ashley,” he speaks to me as if I’m a child, obviously trying to break through the ‘drugs’. “This is Emma. Listen to her, too. Only listen to the people staying in this house, Ok?” I nod. “Good. Now I’ll show you to our room.” Emma stares, a look of distaste. Phil is never condescending.
~That night~
3am. Why can I never sleep through a full night? I reach my arm back, trying to find Phil, but he’s not there. I hear voices from the next room, and figure he’s explaining everything to Emma. All of the sudden I realize that my throat is dry, so I creep out of bed to get a drink. on the way to the kitchen, though, I hear sobbing. “It’ll be alright, Phil. I’m sure they’ll wear off soon.”
“But what if they don’t? I can’t live without her.”
“Then finish what you wanted to do. Phil, don’t be so hung up. It will be fine!” There is a long silence after this.
I have to press my ear to the door to hear Phil respond. His voice is softer than I’ve ever heard before... “I just can’t lose her again. I hate her this way. She’s thoughtless, and stupid, and...suffering. She hates the people who act like she is right now even more than I do. What if the real part of her dies?” I hear a slight squeak of bedsprings, and then Phil’s crying becomes muffled.
I back away from the door, in tears myself. I forget the drink and run back to the bed, the image of Aaron’s message imbedded in my brain, holding the mark showing where the microphone is hidden under my skin. Suddenly, my phone buzzes and I read the message. ‘Perfect, Ashley. The fag wants to be a fag, then let him fucking kill himself. Saves me the trouble. You’re mine, you little bitch.’ If only I’d been sober when he asked me to bail him out...
