As Rory stood, dressed in black, lump in her throat threatening to cut off her oxygen supply, she though back to a time before this. Before the cancer, before the hurt, before funny boys with cute voices. When she was just a fresher in a brand-spanking-new city, head full of possibilities and happiness. But now? Now she was a lost girl standing in a funeral home flanked by her brother, father and uncle protecting her as various faceless figures came over, voices thick with sympathy.
"Your mother was an amazing woman"
"She will be greatly missed"
"You look so much like her"
They were all meant to be comforting but the only comfort Rory wanted was that of the soothing voice of her mother's that she hadn't heard since the heart monitor when flat.
Rory wanted everything to pause, go back, reset, start again but this wasn't a movie and she didn't have the remote.
"This is okay" Will tried to reassure himself. "It completely okay to visit a friend at a place they have explicitly said they go every week – completely okay."
He looked down at his watch. 16:57. He was 3 minutes early. He looked up at the sign above his head. CJM Amateur Film and Design School. He was in the right place. He was also nervous – very nervous. He didn't want Rory's and his first meeting to be under these circumstances but he was so worried; after that last phone call all he could think about was the possibility of something happening to her. And that thought was what was both shredding him up and powering him forward.
As he was starting to sike himself out of this when a tall girl with ash blonde hair waltzed passed him and unlocked the glass door in front of them. He had expected her to continue in the same blasé way she had regarded him previously but instead she turned and looked directly at Will. Expectantly; her green eyes blazing.
"Hello. Can I help you?"
"Um... yeah actually, do you think you could help me find someone?"
"I probably would but who you are looking for isn't here Will."
Will's jaw must have been as low as his eyes were wide because her walls dropped and offered him a sympathetic smile.
"Nametag."
"Oh." Both sets of eyes move to the offending badge on Will's chest.
"Look about Rory. I know just as much as you do. She rushed out of London sometime 2 weeks ago and has apparently forgotten how to pick up a phone since."
"I know I'm just so worried and I just need to know if she's okay."
Need. Not want.
"I get it, really I do. Rory's one of my best friends but I have a feeling Rory will be found when Rory wants to be found."
The girl offered him another weak smile before turning round and entering through the glass door.
"What if she wants to be found but can't"
But the girl was already through the door.
