Kyle’s eyes flickered open, immediately sensing it was the morning. His mother was definitely making breakfast, because the scent of pancakes found their way into his room. He rubbed his eyes, pushed the tangled covers off of him, and sauntered down the stairs.
Once Kyle had entered the kitchen, he found that his mother was nowhere near the kitchen. Actually, she wasn’t even in the house at that moment. Instead of seeing his mother making pancakes, he saw his little brother flipping the pancakes.
“Joshua!” Kyle exclaimed, as Joshua accidentally flipped the under cooked pancake onto the floor. Kyle rolled his eyes and pulled Joshua away from the stove. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“Mom said we can make pancakes. So I started to make some.” Joshua said, crossing his tiny arms over his chest. Kyle let out a frustrated sigh and began cleaning up the pancake that was laying across the wooden floor.
“She said we. I’m pretty sure she meant me too.” Kyle said, throwing the dirty paper towel into the garbage can next to the kitchen counter. Joshua shrugged and looked at the pancake mix box.
“I did all of the instructions right.” Joshua said defensively. “Therefore, I can make pancakes by myself.” Kyle rolled his eyes once again and took the skillet off of the stove.
“Don’t cook without me though!” Kyle said, turning the stove off. “You could’ve hurt yourself.”
“But I didn’t. Plus, you were asleep and I was hungry.” Joshua said.
“You could’ve just woke me up and I would help you.” Kyle put the dirty bowls into the sink and began washing them.
“I didn’t want to disturb your dreams of that girl you went to the concert with.” Joshua said, a smirk appearing on his face.
“I wasn’t dreaming about her.” Kyle said. “I was awake most of the night anyways.”
“Thinking about her.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Just shut up and help me clean up.” Kyle said, continuing to clean the kitchen that had been wrecked by his little brother.
“So we’re not going to have pancakes for breakfast? What am I supposed to eat? Bugs?” Joshua questioned.
“I’ll take you out to eat, only if you help me clean up.” Kyle said. “Wait, where’s mom?”
“She had to go to work earlier today.” Joshua said, starting to help his brother clean up. “Ooh! I have an idea!”
“What?”
“Lets invite Penny to breakfast with us!”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“She has work today. Plus, she probably already had breakfast with Katherine.”
“You’re no fun.” Joshua stated, throwing a pancake at Kyle’s face. It hit Kyle’s cheek, and made Kyle more annoyed than he already had been.
Once the kitchen had been spotless, Kyle and Joshua both got ready. Kyle had his usual routine in the morning, which was take a shower, get dressed, brush his teeth and hair, then off to wherever he was planned to go. Joshua hated taking baths, so he usually got one at night and his routine wasn’t nearly as long as Kyle’s.
Kyle pulled out his phone and called Brian and Michael. He didn’t want to sit in a restaurant all alone with his bratty eight-year-old brother, so he decided to invite Michael and Brian. Maybe today could be their end of summer get together. Both Brian and Michael agreed to meeting up at Waffle House, so now all Kyle had to do was drag Joshua out of the house and into his car.
