When I woke up that morning, I was feeling overwhelmed and groggily because of last night.
I looked down at my broken glasses, upset. I went upstairs to get changed into an outfit for school, which was one of my favorites.
It was a white dress with a red cardigan sweater over it. I wore black tights underneath with white socks and a brown pair of combat boots.
However, there was one thing to worry about. I went to the bathroom and checked the mirror, to find a bruise surrounding my eye. It had some purple mixed in with black on it too.
I sighed, I didn't want to go to school today, but I had to.
:::
When I showed up to school, I was having a hard time trying to see. Weird thing was, people didn't care about my bruised eye except for a few people.
I went to my locker, and I tried to hide myself from Shawn. He couldn't know my secret.
I was trying to open my locker by twisting the knob. I acted as if I was having hard time with it.
"Hey Jasmine." Shawn greeted.
"Hey Shawn." I said, speaking fast and nervously. I acted completely jittery.
"Where's my kiss?" Shawn joked. I pulled my hair in the front, trying to hide it. When I turned around, he seemed confused.
"Where are you glasses?" Shawn questioned, suspicious. He tried to move my hair to the side, but I backed away.
"Oh those old things." I said nervously, trying to smile. He frowned, not catching my joke.
"Jasmine, wait. Be serious please." He went up to me, sweeping my parted hair to the side. He gasped at the sight of my eye.
"What happened to you?" He interrogated. I remained speechless for a moment, trying to come up with an excuse.
"Did someone hit you? If so, who?" He demanded again.
"No one Shawn. I was just a bit of a klutz that's all. I was sleepwalking yesterday from a nightmare, had my glasses on, and bumped into a wall." I lied, and Shawn just looked at me in disproval.
"I may be dumb at things, but this one is obvious. Jasmine who did it to you?" Shawn asked.
"I told you what happened, okay? Just let it be." I pleaded. Shawn and I just stared at each other directly in the eyes, not speaking a word. I kissed him on the lips reassuringly, and headed to class, him following me.
After school was over, Shawn met up with me by my locker.
"Sorry about this morning, I just get protective of you that's all. How about we get new glasses for you? Then maybe we can go to Chubbie's and eat something?"
I nodded my head yes. When we arrived there, the eye doctors were a little suspicious about my eye. I told them I was fine, informing them the story I told Shawn. I wasn't so sure if they believed it or not, but oh well.
"How about we just hand you contacts then if you have a bad habit at sleep walking? We can give you backup glasses just in case." The doctor suggested.
"Thats fine." I said. The doctor prescribed me the eye contacts, and but I didn't put them in right away. It's just with my bruised eye. So, I decided to wear my new glasses which were in the color burgundy.
I told Shawn what happened and he smiled.
"They look great on you. You look gorgeous no matter what." He complimented me.
:::
A couple weeks later my eye was okay. I still got hit around, as my dad would abuse me. I had bruises everywhere on my back, on my upper arms, and a cut. I swear everyday would get more brutal for me.
Since it was the week of Halloween, the school decorations were filled with an autumn and spooky theme. Fake leaves surrounded the lockers, monster decorations were in the scene too. It was cute.
Topanga was asking me if I wanted to go to her Halloween party on Friday.
Since she wasn't a popular girl, she was going to have a small party. Which I was fine with.
"You must wear a costume." She insisted.
"I will." I promised her.
"What's this about a party I hear?" Shawn asked from out of nowhere, getting a hold of my hand.
"Shall we invade?" Cory joked, doing the same thing. Topanga rolled her eyes at him although she couldn't help but smile.
"Ugh. It's a sleepover with a few friends which means no boys allowed." Topanga strictly told them.
"That makes us want to invade more." Shawn teased, staring at me with a foolish grin. He kissed me, then we all made it to each other's class.
After school was over I went to the costume store in town.
I searched for costumes that might interest me, but so far I hadn't found anything.
Now I wasn't really the Halloween fanatic. I didn't take interest of it at all because I never really got to spend time enjoying it since I didn't have any friends to go or do anything with them on that night.
I decided the costume store just wasn't for me. Although I did see something on the stand that caught my attention.
I found a light blue gown like dress that resembled one of my favorite characters. It was Wendy Darling.
I took some time to think about it, and made my decision. I headed inside the store and asked the store clerk how much it costed.
"That's just for display," the person said, pointing over there to it,"but there's some at that rack over there."
"Thank you." I went over to it and found one in my size. I went to go in a dressing room to see if it fit me, which luckily it did.
I took it off, and made my purchase.
"You are trying to be Wendy Darling, right?" The clerk asked, reading my mind.
"Yes. How did you know?" I wondered, confused. He smirked.
"Do you ever get told you would make the perfect Wendy?"
"No." I admitted.
"Well you do."
"Thanks." I said.
Sure I had the outfit, but I was missing the other things, like the lavender ribbon that went around the waist, and the bow for my hair. I headed to another store to see what I could find.
I found a tiny rack that held all kinds of bows and ribbons. So I found myself a light blue one and a purple ribbon, then thought I should be good.
Until something caught the apple of my eye.
I found a pair of dark blue flats that would help make the whole outfit complete. Not to mention they were half off cause of Halloween! After I bought the outfit, I couldn't help but smile. I was happy that I would finally be excited about Halloween.
:::
The night of the Halloween party I had to sneak as best as I could. I dressed into the costume I picked out. I did my hair half up, and half down, and secured the bow in it. I enticed the purple ribbon around my waist, and slipped into my new shoes.
The only makeup I added was lip gloss. I wasn't really a fan of makeup.
After I felt as if I was done, I shoved my other clothes into a bag. When I headed downstairs, I looked cautiously around the room in case someone was nearby. My dad's friends however were in the room. Before I could sneak back upstairs, one of them pointed me out.
"Hey that daughter of yours is in a weird ass costume." I heard them point out to me.
"She has a nice ass though." I heard one of them say. I closed my eyes, pretending it wasn't real. Before I could head upstairs, one of them came and grabbed me into the kitchen.
"Hey? Why you leaving?" I recognized him. He was that guy from the one night who kept tossing me around among the others as if I was sort of salad.
I didn't answer his question, instead pushing him away. But he grabbed a hold of me, hard to get out of his hold.
"Let go of me!" I yelled at him.
"No this is better!" He exclaimed. They smacked my bottom as I tried to squirm out of his hold. I later jammed him in the head, and he dropped me hard to the floor. I got a hold of my stuff and rushed out of the house, running to Topanga's house as fast as I could.
:::
When I knocked on her door, turns out I was a little late. Topanga opened her front door, her in a pink dress.
"Jasmine! You look so pretty! Come in." She insists. I headed inside, finding Trinie and Dawn on the couch scorching through a bowl of candy. Trinie grabbed one of the small bubblegums and put one in her mouth, chewing on it. She turned her attention to me, smiling.
"Hey Jasmine." She greeted, blowing a bubble, then eventually popping it and chewing it again.
"Hi Jasmine! You look amazing. Wendy, right?" Dawn asked me. I nodded.
"And you're Daria. I love that show." I said.
"Me too." She agreed.
"I'm a pirate. Topanga what are you again?" Trinie asked.
"I'm a damsel." Topanga confirmed.
I took a piece of candy from the bowl, which was a mini Reese's.
"So, Jasmine. How are you and Shawn?" Trinie teased me. I rolled my eyes but I just smiled at the thought of him.
"Great. We've been dating for about a month now, so yeah." I said, and the girls made an,"ooh noise."
"Speaking of him, him and Cory might be coming here later." Topanga predicted.
"Agh, boys. Who needs boys when you got food?" Dawn stated.
"That's very true Dawn." Trinie agrees, throwing another bubblegum in her mouth. She can't get enough of that, can't she?
"Thing was, Cory was acting strange. He said I needed to stay away from him or else I could get hurt, he always ranting on about him becoming a werewolf. It's all nonsense." Topanga informed us.
"Yeah, I could expect Shawn ranting about him being a vampire and wanting to suck my blood." I replied.
"Knowing him, probably." Topanga pointed out.
"Aka him wanting to give you a hickey." Trinie defined for us.
"How about we all go upstairs and tell each other scary stories?"
"Only if it can involve food." Dawn insists.
"Yeah! I'll go heat up the popcorn!" Trinie called. Before Topanga could stop her, Trinie ran into the kitchen.
"Well let's go." She decided. Dawn and I followed her upstairs, going to her bedroom. Topanga had it already planned out.
She set up the blankets for us to sit on and had candles lit up. She turned off the light, making it look spooky. We all sat down next to beside each other, waiting for Trinie. She came upstairs a couple minutes later with a hot bowl of popcorn, freshly popped covered with melted butter.
"Alright, who's starting?" She said, stuffing a handful of popcorn into her mouth.
"I'll start." Topanga decided.
I wasn't at all listening to the story she was telling. I heard part of it, like the main subject which was about some sort of possession, but I began to drift away alone in my own thoughts. I just wondered what life would be like if I lived with Shawn. But I don't know if that would be a possibility or not.
Next was Dawn. Hers had been about a pizza haunting everyone's soul, causing everyone who ate this box of pizza to turn into one. Weird, but okay.
"Mine is about a serial killer chasing after a girl, and blah blah blah. Next?"
"All signs point to Jasmine. What's yours?" Topanga asked.
"I don't have one. You can go ahead." I offered her, but she shook her head.
"Just come on at the top of your head. It can be anything." Topanga insisted.
"Remember mine was about The Haunting Pizza Curse of Philly." Dawn reminded me. I sighed. They weren't going to let me out of this one.
However, before I could start, the window opened, revealing Shawn. But no sign of Cory.
"Ugh, a boy." Dawn scoffed, and Shawn ignored her.
"Hey Shawn. Where's Cory?" Topanga wondered.
"The kids acting insane. He thinks he's a werewolf and is trying to convince me he is. You need to go talk to him." Shawn insisted.
"Are you saying that? Or are you just saying that so you can spend time with Jasmine?" Topanga accused.
"It's the truth Topanga. Go talk to him. I promise I'm not going to do anything." Shawn promised.
"Alright, but if it's a trick, I swear I'm coming back and throwing you out of that window that very instant. So you better be a good boy." Topanga warned him, and headed out of the bedroom.
I looked up at Shawn, who went take Topanga's old seat so he could go sit beside me.
"Was this really a trick?" I asked, smirking.
"No actually. But hey, a moment on the day before Halloween night for them at least. They really need it," Shawn said, scooting closer to me,"but hey at least we have one on our own."
Before we could kiss, we get interrupted when Trinie and Dawn pretended to cough.
"You know you're not alone. Don't make me feel so bad." Dawn insisted.
"Sorry Dawn." I apologized.
"I'm just teasing. How about you and Shawn go out for a little while? If you're late we can stall Topanga." Dawn says.
"I like the sound of that." Shawn smirked. I stood up and right away he did too.
"Now go, go." Trinie sat up, pushing Shawn out. I sneaked out with Shawn, but thing was, I had a hard time climbing out of Topanga's window.
I had experience, but I was afraid I would hurt myself like I did last time.
Shawn jumped, acting as if it was so casual for him. Like he did it everyday.
He saw how scared I was, as I was trying to jump.
"I'll catch you. Just jump." Shawn insisted. He held out his arms for me so that way I would have a place to land. I took the risk and jumped, landing in his arms perfectly. I wrapped my arms around his neck, kinda bridal style like. I was so astonished at how he did it so perfectly.
"Well you know tonight I'll be your Peter since you're obviously my Wendy." He teased. I smiled at what he said, and he dropped me to my feet.
"Lets go for a walk." He insisted. He got a hold of my hand, allowing him to lead me anywhere.
:::
"So what exactly did I interrupt? Topanga I know was furious as it was, but what did I interrupt?" He wondered.
"Well we were telling each other spooky stories. I was supposed to go, but you interrupted us when you climbed through the window." I told him.
"I have a story to tell." He stated with a smirk.
"And what is that?" I asked, returning the gesture.
"It's about a vampire who's with his girlfriend. He's tempted to give her a kiss on the neck but really..." Shawn's voice trailed off when his arms wrapped around me, landing his lips on my neck. I just smiled, as he began to kiss there. However, I felt a little weird. Shawn noticed how nervous I looked, and he pulled away.
"I'm sorry was it a little too far?" Shawn asked, scratching the back of his neck. He felt guilty he did that.
"Oh no. You're okay." I insisted to him. Instead of returning to where he was, he leaned in for a kiss on the lips. I pressed my lips against his, his hands resting on both my cheeks.
He pulled away shortly after as a group of bad neighborhood kids were running with a carton of eggs in their hands.
"Where are you guys going?" He wondered.
"Hunter! Come on man, help us go egg Mr. Hull's house!" One of them insisted.
"No, not this year Remy. I'm with my girlfriend this year." Shawn pointed out.
"Ugh. Oh well, your loss!" Remy yelled back at him since he was getting further away.
"Wanna go to a haunted house?" Shawn invited me.
"Sure." I decided. He gets a hold of my hand, leading me to the apparent haunted house. Once we arrived, I felt a strange feeling form in the pits of my stomach. This didn't seem right.
Shawn knocked on the door to see if anyone would answer. He tried to open it, but sadly it didn't work. He bit his bottom lip, thinking for a moment. He glanced around, looking for a way until something caught his attention.
"Ahh, I see what we can do to get in." Shawn decided and started to climb on the porch railing. He climbed the top of the roof, but turned around so he could help me up there.
He got a hold of me by my arms, pulling me up there to meet him. He crawled towards the window, then climbed through. Before I could fully head in, I was nervous again.
However, I slipped inside just fine.
Once I got inside, I couldn't help but glance around. This appeared to be an attic, since it was filled with dust and tangled cobwebs, and portraying to settle as the top part of the haunted house.
Shawn however was nowhere to be found.
"Shawn? Where did you go?" I asked him, feeling a little frightened. I searched the room for him, then realized I had to take the scary route: opening the door.
I opened it, nervous to find something that would pop out of nowhere.
I spun around, trying to find him, until bumped into someone.
Luckily it was Shawn. I sighed in relief, happy that it wasn't anyone else.
"You scared me Shawn!" I scolded him.
"Sorry Jas." Shawn shrugged, then we headed downstairs. It revealed to me a living room, with a mystic printed rug below us, and a burgundy couch with a sheet over it.
Shawn sat down and patted on the cushion for me to sit there. I did as he requested, wrapping his arms around my waist. He smashed his lips into mine, us kissing each other. It was more like making out, it seemed like.
We both pulled away eventually so that way we could have a conversation before I had to leave.
"I wonder if Topanga is back yet." I admitted, Shawn and I eating some of the candy he got from tonight.
"I doubt it.. Knowing them too..." Shawn said, smirking. I thought for a moment too, realizing what he said was true.
"So how about you finish that story? About the you know..." I reminded him of it.
"Oh yeah.. And the vampire lured his girlfriend into a house alone, then did this." Shawn leaned in, kissing me on the side of my neck. He turned into a love bite, therefore being a hickey. Suddenly, the sound of a howl interrupted us, squealing into the night.
"That must be Cory." Shawn said with a smirk.
"I guess I better get going before Topanga kills us." I decided, standing up.
Shawn walked me back to Topanga's.
"Happy Halloween my dark, leather jacket wearing vampire." I teased him.
"Happy Halloween Wendy Darling." He did the same thing, then leaned in for a kiss. We kissed for a while until it was time for me to leave.
He helped me sneak up the tree back inside her window, which worked. I sat in my usual spot, as if nothing had happened. Topanga wasn't back luckily.
"I knew it! I called it. Jasmine has a hickey!" Dawn pointed out to Trinie. Trinie gasped.
"So how was your night?" Trinie asked. I noticed she made a second batch of popcorn, as she stuffed a handful into her mouth just like earlier.
"It was good." I answered her. The door then opened, revealing Topanga. She closed the door behind her and leaned back on it, smiling to herself.
"I see someone else had a great night as well." Trinie pointed out, smirking,
"Cory and I kissed. I convinced him he wasn't a werewolf, then he kissed me." Topanga gossiped with us the details.
She went to go sit beside us, just like we were earlier.
"So, Jasmine. Ready to tell your Halloween story since you haven't yet?" Topanga asked.
"Alright, I got one." I told them.
"Tell us." My friends insisted.
I decided to tell them a story similar from tonight.
It was about a vampire who took the girl he had a crush on, and made her his girlfriend at his haunted house. He turned her into a vampire, then together they lived as one of the eldest couples. Anyone however who interrupted them and their life got the living hell sucked out of them, so that definitely warned them to not trespass them.
"It was a good story, but you really needed to add food. Like he took her out to get a bucket of fried chicken." Dawn suggested.
"I think it was the best story I've ever heard." Trinie praised me. We all talked for a while, and basically after we ate the bowl of popcorn, that's when we were getting tired.
"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm getting tired. We should get some sleep." Topanga decided.
"Now that it's officially no longer Halloween, I just have one thing to say: don't have spooky nightmares anyone, and think of food." Dawn warned us, speaking the truth.
We settled into our blown up air mattresses, and tried our best to get enough sleep as possible. Especially for me since it was going to be a busy day with Shawn tomorrow. We were going to go on a date tomorrow.
:::
When I woke up that morning I realized I had to get ready. Everyone else did too.
I decided to go take a shower, so that way it would be easier for me to change. I dressed into a sweater and a pair of leggings I found to match with it. I couldn't blow dry my hair sadly, but at the most I was going to air dry it.
When I got out out of the bathroom, Topanga was outside looking at me strangely.
"What's wrong Topanga?" I asked, nervous why she was staring at me like that.
"Come here. We need to talk." We headed back to her room, and she locked the door, leaving us alone.
"Sit down." She ordered, and I sat down on the bed, worried.
"What's going on? Is everything okay?" I asked her.
"Yeah, but I can see everything's not okay with you." Topanga said.
"Huh?"
"Is something going on Jasmine? With you and Shawn I should know about?"
Topanga asked me randomly. I wasn't getting this.
"No... Why would you think that?" I questioned her.
"Cause I seen bruises on your back. He doesn't hit you, does he?"
My eyes widened.
"No why would he do that Topanga?" I demanded her, getting a little defensive.
"Who is doing that to you? Where are those bruises from? And your black eye the other day..." Topanga pointed out.
"I'm perfectly okay Topanga. Don't you think I'd be telling you if anything happened?" I asked, trying to lower my voice so someone wouldn't hear.
"But it looks like you're not telling me anything Jasmine! Please tell me. If you're getting hurt or something, you can tell me anything! I'm your best friend. Best friends don't keep secrets from each other." She pointed out.
"Just leave it be." I pleaded her.
"Jasmine please-"
"I need to go meet Shawn. Bye Topanga." I said to her. I grabbed my bag, and left her room. I rushed downstairs, then left her house.
I ran a few blocks away from her house, then I couldn't help but break down.
Tears swelled up my eyes, then escaping out of them and streaming down my cheeks.
There was no one that I could go to for this. No one could ever know.
