Chapter 5
A sudden wave of sunlight directly shines over my face. I groan and flip over so the sun shines on my back. It wasn't until I heard the clicking noise of heels that I pieced together mom had opened the curtains. She then grabs ahold of my blankets and pulls them off my body, my body now exposed to the cold morning air.
"Mom" I groan as I sit up and glare at her.
"Get dressed we have a brunch to attend to." She says and begins to leave the room. I reach over the bed to grab the sheets but stop" Don't even think about it" Mom warns as she looks back at me.
I sigh and cross my arms in front of my chest like an angry child. I see a pastel pink dress hanging on the closet door with a pair of wedges on the floor.
I first get out of bed and wash up then return to the room where I change. I add a little makeup, I comb my fingers through my hair. The curls from last night make my hair look nice. I strap on the wedges and grab my white coat.
I leave the room and find mom waiting for me at the front door. "You look cute" She says with a smile. "Thanks. So do you" I say. She wears a plum colored pencil skirt with a matching blouse and black stilettos. Her hair is in a loose yet sophisticated bun.
"Where are we going again?" I ask followed by a yawn.
"A brunch. It's a fundraiser held by the Bass' family." She answers as we enter the elevator.
"The Bass family?" I ask
"Bart Bass and Charles Bass. You may or may not have met Charles, he attends St. Judes." Mom answers.
The doors open and we exit, I follow her as she leads the way. "I don't know, mom" I say. She walks into a large room where many people occupy the room. Round tables are scattered around the room along with chairs. The brunch table stands in the back of the room as well with odd statues.
"Madaline" A tall man says. He has little hair left on his scalp but his blue eyes stand out from any other of his features. I recognize him from somewhere but I can't lay my finger on it.
"Bart. So nice to see you" Mom says to the man with a grin. Bart Bass. That's who is. I read about him on the New York Times, he's quite the catch but not's why I recognize him. "This is my daughter Lena" Mom introduces me to Bart.
"Pleasure to meet you" I smile and shake his hand.
"Pleasure is mine" He says.
"Mom, I'm going to go get some food" I say lowly to mom. She nods in approval and I leave the two to chat.
"Lena" A familiar voice says from behind me. I spin around on my heels and see Nate with a smile on his face.
"Hi!" I greet.
"Hey. How are you?" He asks
"Good and yourself?" I say with a small smile.
"Good. I didn't see you last night at the party" Nate says.
"Oh. I went but I left early. Sorry I know you knew I was going to be there" I explain to him.
"It's fine. I was just curious." He says. Thanks to Nate, Jace pops into my head. The feeling of being stood up returns to me once again but this time I feel enraged.
"Are you alright?" Nate asks. I look at him with a fake smile.
"Yeah. Just hungry" I lie.
"Well, come on then" He chuckles and leads the way to the brunch table. He hands me a plate and I thank him.
