Chapter 28

- Liam said. Lilli shrugged. "I'm not cut out for it." Lilli closed her eyes , wishing she could take it back. Everything. From the moment she rounded that stupid corner on her stupid bike over a stupid year ago. 

Everybody would be happier. Lerman wouldn't hate her. Fabian would still be alive. Sophie and Zander wouldn't be in danger-. "I wonder why?" Liam asked truly curious. 

Lilli sighed "Well I wasn't planning on having kids, it just kinda ya know..." Lilli let the sentence hang, color rising to cheeks. 

"Whose the father?" Liam asked. 

Lilli rolled her eyes when she saw the slight smile play at Liam's lips. 

"Listen," she said moving past him, "I've got somethings to settle." 

Liam blocked her way. "You can't." he said matter-of-faculty. As if this were over. 

"Jessie!" he called. He handed her the babies. 

"Don't-" Lilli protested but Jessie inturppted. 

'They will be fine with me, sheesh Lilli! I tried to tell you! The only reason I joined with Damen was to protect them. I kept them safe! Until Fabian got involved and took Zander..." 

"Fabian is dead!" Lilli shouted tears streaming. "I don;t understand your sick way of 'helping' but don't1" Jessie sighed impatiently. 

"Don you know that Lilli? Did you see his lifeless body? Did you get the call?" Lilli stood gaping at her. 

"He's a shitting agent! He wouldn't just go and commit suicide over a girl!" Lilli collapsed at the last part. 

Liam reached out and caught her. Lilli struggled for a moment but gave in. She didn't care if Liam held her. It gave her a sence of security. Something she hasn't had in awhile. 

Jessie peered over her, "We're watchers Lilli. We're keepers. We've been assigned to guard you. Hasn't it ever occurred to you, that we always pop up at the worst moments?" Jessie asked. 

Lilli mutter something about gate, but Jessie just waved it away dismissively. "No Lilli. Everything we do is a puzzle. A defined place we're supposed to go, but don't always fit perfectly. And your just finding the last pieces." 

Lilli shook her head, still being supported by Liam but now standing. 

"Who are my keepers?" Jessie sighed. 

"Me, Fabian and Liam." 

"Then what are you protecting me from?"
