Chapter 9

I woke up realizing that Ash never returned to the room. Worry wears down at me. 'Maybe he escaped?' I thought trying to cheer myself up. I rubed my eyes and yawned, wanting to curl up, fall asleep and never wake up. I lie back down and close my eyes. 'Only for a minute,' I tell myself, but the yearn to sleep is overwhelming. I fall asleep slowly, then all at once.

I wake up to the sound of metal clanging onto the floor. "Get up!" Trip yelled. He had thrown a tray of food on the floor. I stared at the toast and orange juice that was splattered all over the tile floor. "Get up," Trip growled again. I stand up and try to rub the sleep from my eyes. Trip leads me downstairs and into the living room. In there is Tess, Mark, Lisa, and a new face. He was much older than the others, as his white hair and wrinkled skin showed. He had a beard that covered his neck. His blue eyes seemed to sparkle with wisdom. "Hello." He greeted me. "I am Luther. It is a pleasure to meet you Rachel."
I stood there speechless and gaping at the old man. I searched for words and stuttered out a shaky "H-hi." He stuck his had out for me to shake it. I reached my hand out hesitantly and grabbed his.
"Do you understand why you are here and why it is you and not some other girl from the street?" He said. I shook my head. "Sit down please."
"You have been chosen to lead a war, young one. You have the strength and the will power to do so. The war between Light and Dark. You are the one whom may bring life or destruction. Rachel, you are the Chosen One. You are the Catalyst." Luther finished.
My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe a word he was saying. "W-why me?" I pondered.
"Your mother was from light, and your father from dark. You are the only unaligned mythical creature living today." He answered.
"But why do I-I have to g-go through all of these tests?" I ask trying to muster up all the confidence I have. "What if I want to stay unaligned?" I say with out a stutter.
Luther and the others stared at me. "If you do, the war will destroy you." Said a voice from the kitchen. I glanced over a saw Ash leaning in the counter holding an apple. "Or so I am told." He finished an took a bit of the apple.
"You're okay!" I stated. Ash nodded.
"I had to keep our other guest company." He replied. It took all my strength not to go over there and hug him.
"So you have been doing your homework." Tess said.
Ash ignored her comment and walked over to me.
"But now, I want to see her in action." Luther said. I gulped and glanced towards the door which contained a task. Possible something deadly.
"N-now?" I asked. Luther nodded. I hesitantly walked over to the door, opened it and walked into the room. I closed the door behind me.
"Test 5: fencing." The glass table in the middle of the room held one fencing sword. I picked it up and held it in front of me. The door opened and Luther walked in, holding a sword as well.
"En guarde!" He yelled and lunged at me. I held up my sword and blocked his swing. I lunged at his torso and he doged. I took a step back and waited for his next move. Luther swung high at my head and I ducked. He then swung at my legs and I jumped, suddenly grateful for the previous tests. I swung out at him and he doged, but this time I didn't back out. I swung again. His sword met mine with a clash and Luther stepped back, trying to put some distance between us. I could hear him panting. Taking advantage of the moment I swung at his torso. He blocked again. I jumped back and prepared for him to lunge at me. He jumped straight out and tried to stapes the foil point into my stomach. I jumped back and batted his sword away from me. Soon I was panting to. Luther was good, I was inexperienced. But I had an avantage, he was old, he got tired faster then I did. All I had to do was wear him out.
I lunged at him and swung recklessly but it was enough to keep him busy. He blocked every swipe and stab. He took a chance and swung at me and I blocked. I started to advance and disengage and swipe and swing. I moved around never staying in one place. I lunged at him and he blocked once more. I backed away but I did not a wait his move, I stepped forward and stabbed out at his ribcage.
"Touché." I mocked him.
He started clapping. "You're better then I thought." He stated. "I alm-" he started but was cut off when he broke into a coughing fit.
"Are you-" I started.
"Test 5 complete." The green gas filled the room.
"No! You have to help him!" I yelled before I lost concious.
