So, there has been a lot of questions about Minecraft: Story Mode, not the game, it's the mode itself. What is story mode anyway? In Minecraft, there are only six modes: survival, creative, hardcore, classic, adventure and spectator mode. So, which mode does story mode take place?
Our theory is, MCSM took place in NONE of these modes.
Here's why.
Right off the bat, it is definite that story mode can't possibly set in creative mode nor spectator mode. Because 1) None of the characters have unlimited resources that we know of. 2) None of them looks like a flying ghost head and able to walk through walls. 3) They can die. So these two modes are the least we have to concern about.
Next one, classic mode. This mode is also a "no" to our list because classic mode has an entirely different texture pack. Plus, I don't think biomes exists in that mode.
Then there is adventure mode. As all minecrafters know, players are not able to break blocks in this mode. But throughout the game, we can see Jesse and the others break blocks like dirt, sand, and even stone! So is this MCSM: Adventure Mode? Nope.
It is logical to say Minecraft: Story Mode is not in survival mode. The reason is simple, the dead characters never respawned. You might be thinking, "Maybe their spawn point is far away from the Order, so we can't see them in the game."
Another reason is that when you mine stone with your fist, it does not disappear. In MCSM, if you mine cobblestone then it will appear as a block in your inventory.
But think about this, not everyone will decide to live far away from spawn in survival mode, so if they died, they can quickly respawn and tell their friends about their 'death experience'. If MCSM is in survival mode, I think this whole respawn thing would be a well-known fact in the MCSM universe. However in the game, whenever a character dies, everyone was so depressed like they're actually gone. So one more mode cleared off from the list.
Our last mode is hardcore mode. A mode that's very similar to survival mode, but the difference is, the difficulty of survival mode can be set to peaceful, easy, default, and hard. However, in hardcore mode, the difficulty will permanently set to hard. Also, when a player dies, they are not able to respawn back to the map they originally were.
But how are we going to know what difficulty MCSM is in? The answer is simple, attack damage. In the game, Jesse has to fight a lot of mobs. Let's take the zombies as an example, if you do nothing in the fight scenes, you can see Jesse's health is decreasing two hearts per attack, which is 4 health points. According to Minecraft Wikipedia, a zombie's attack damage is 4 health points in the difficulty HARD, exactly 4 health points.
What about respawning? As we just said, in hardcore mode, when a player dies, they are not able to respawn back to the map they originally were.
Let's say, a map in Minecraft is a universe in MCSM. Which means if you died in this map, in terms of MCSM, you're gone from this universe.
I think the system of universes works similarly as 'Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension'
(If you haven't watched it, you have to check it out. It is my childhood favorite. :3 #NotSponsered XD)
Anyway, in the movie, Belgie stated, "Think all portal energy is circular and is moving clockwise, say your dimension is right next to us, you traveled with the flow of energy, so it's easy to get here."
Even though you can respawn in another map and return to the exact spot of where your home supposed to be on that map, you can't find your house, your properties or anyone you know. Because that map is not the same as your previous map. Just like the universes in MCSM, they are different.
Just as real life, the afterlife is a forever mystery to the MCSM universe. I mean, would anyone jump out of the window just to see where will it lead him to? ABSOLUTELY NOT (well... it differs from person to person, and we are not judging you)! First, that's suicide. Second, no one knows what will happen after he died, maybe he'll just DIE, nothing else.
If you are now screaming at the screen and shout at us, "SO MCSM TOOK PLACE IN HARDCORE MODE!!!". Here's our reply,
No, it's not. Not exactly.
Why? Remember these items?
- The Order's Amulet
- Ivor's custom armor
- The Command block
- The command block-breaking enchantment
- Portals and its keys
Not so Minecraft, aren't they?
So what mode does MCSM take place?
We'll explain it in part 2...
