today was another day
to look forward to, my
eighteenth birthday.

it felt just like a normal day
because i don't normally
celebrate my birthdays, ever
since my abeoji had passed.
it just never felt the same.

somehow, i felt as if i expected
my friends to call and greet me,
but none of them had called.
it was disappointing, but i
should be used to it upon now.

not even my eomma
had greeted me.

i let out a loud and lasting
sigh as i plop myself down
on the couch.

my ringtone began to play
and i felt the vibration of
my phone that was well
rested onto my leg.

"yeoboseyo?"
i say.

" AHN HYUNHEE "
yoo ri shouted from the
line as i winced in irritation.

"shut the fuck up will you?"
i say in annoyance.

"woke up on the wrong
side of the bed today?"
she joked.

"anyways, get your pancake
ass ready and we're going out.
i need you to come with me
somewhere hence i don't want to go alone, oh! and wear semi-formal."
she says, more of a way to upset me.

i sigh,
"gotcha."

then i hung up.

not even my bestfriend remembered.

i force my way up
and prepared for
whatever she had
in mind.

the white lacey dress caught
my attention in first glance
as i came across the thought
of wearing something
fancy on my birthday.
alongside a pair of nude
coloured heels that jimin
had gotten me.

approximately around 3pm,
yoo ri had finally arrived in
a creme dolce vita dress which
i had bought for her birthday a
few months back.

"love the dress!"
i gushed,

"i thank the person
who bought it."
she says, chuckling.

we head in her car
and as i expected,
she had nothing to
say about my birthday.

although i let myself
wander in curiosity as
to where we were headed.

"where are we even going?"
i question.

"some family party, honestly
i would've just sat there while
i listened to everyone interact."
she remarked.

"very relatable"
i chuckle.

around 15 minutes,
we reached the venue
of the party and the
parking lot was filled.

i stuck closer to yoo ri
as i did not know anyone
at the party. she had a smile
plastered across her face.

once we step foot inside,
it was quite too dark.

"yoo ri, why is it so dark?"
i ask, squinting my eyes.

"yoo ri?"

but i had no answer.

i felt unsteady until a
pair of hands made its
way towards my eyes.

"oh dear lord, please
let me live on my birthday."
i muttered.

"joogeulae?"
a voice so familiar had shouted.

wait, bin?

i felt his arms guide me
somewhere but i was
clueless do to his hand
covering my eyes.

his hands slowly disappears
from my touch but it was
still pitch black.

sanha giggled.

fear arose and i
felt goosebumps
tracking my skin.

" SAENG IL CHUKHA HYUNHEE! "

i felt startled at the sudden
pop up of lights and confetti
that was being thrown every
where. this was definitely
a successful surprise.

i take a look around and
notice that everyone of
my family and friends
were here. my eyes began
to water in gratefulness.

for once in my eighteenth
years of existence, i felt so
happy. this day was not
what i imagined to be,
but overall, i'm thankful.

i head towards the party
planners whom i considered
well as not only my friends
but a part of my family as well.

"thank you, really."

"thank you very much."
i repeatingly say.

"bin actually thought
of this whole thing."
yoo ri says.

the said boy stood there
flustered as he smiled
shyly towards me.

he took the opportunity
to walk towards me and
pulled me in a hug that i
thought would never end.

"i thought that after all the
hardships you've been through,
you atleast deserve this."
says bin, connecting
our foreheads together.

"i'm really thankful for you."
i say.

he chuckles lightly and leaned
closer towards my face. my
heart pounded rapidly and i
felt my body weaken.

slowly, he came closer,
and his lips became in
contact with my cheek,
as everyone in the room
had cheered.

the day consisted of many
laughters and games that
my friends had prepared.
sooner, the time was ticking
and the day was nearing an end.

"bring out the cake!"
bin exclaimed.

my eomma and oppa
had came out of the
door with a cart that
had a huge cake laid on.

the whole room sang in
unison as the cake got closer.
i then closed my eyes and wished
before blowing out the candles.

"you're finally eighteen."
bin says, reaching for my hands.

the disco lights turned on
and music began to play.
surprisingly, the first to
play was a slow song.

"as much as i want to
take this opportunity to
dance with you, your oppa
has been waiting for you."
says bin.

i smile at him and
nod in response.

i walk to my brother's
direction and pulled him
towards the centre.

he lived in L.A for eight
years, the last i saw him i
was around ten years of age.

"i missed you oppa."
i cried out.

"thanks to bin,
i made it here."
he says.

"i knew bin and you
would end up together."
he confessed,

"today is the day."
