I couldn't believe what he had just said, but I remained calm.
"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice sounding even and cool. Now I understand why he was so worried to tell me. I'm sure he doesn't want me to be scared of him, but he also knows that I need information over these kinds of things. How else am I suppose to completely understand him.
His lips pulled into a tight line, and he remained quiet for a few moments, but I didn't rush him. I know he has my best interest at the top of his mind. The fact that he chose to tell me in the first place is a big step.
"My dad is kind of traditional. And when I got old enough, he insisted on taking me on a hunt. I didn't realize that we would be hunting... well.. hunting humans." He spoke, but his shoulders were shaking.
"I don't even remember much about the trip its self, but I do remember the after effect. The next time I went to town, I heard the town folk talking.
I.. I ended up killing the father of a family. I heard of all the things that his pregnant wife and children had to go through." He looked into my eyes, as if begging me to understand. "I felt terrible. I had taken away the provider for the family, and the wife was starting to get sick from grief, and she couldn't do much about her child either.""I begged my father to do something. We had to help them. But he didn't really understand. He was furious that I was still even concerning myself with the humans life. As I said, he is very traditional." He finally finished, and he shifted his eyes down. I remained silent for a while, soaking in the new information. I watched his form. He looked so delicate, like he could break any moment. I could tell how much he must have thought about this. How badly he felt about the whole situation.
"So, what happened to her and the children?" I asked. I had to know how the story ended.
"I used the spending money I was saving up and left it for her. It was enough to cover the baby fees, and to hire someone to take care of them for a while. Since then, I've made sure she got a great job once she was healthy again. I know I can never make up for what I did, but I still had to do something." While explaining, he still hasn't looked up at me, I place my hand on his trembling shoulder, and he flashed up. I smiled sadly at him, and pulled him into a hug.
" I think it's great that your repenting for you crimes. I'm sure that you did everything you could to help her. That's much more than some people would do, and as a vampire, there was bound to be one victim. You shouldn't blame yourself. You were young and trying to please your father, which from what I've heard, is not an easy task." He held on to me, and I could feel his tension start to settle. His arms wrapped around my waist and my arms where linked behind his neck. After a couple of moments, I pulled away and smiled down at him.
He looked up, still a bit worried, but smiled softly.
"The reason I told you was because my father is requesting to meet you apparently, according to my mother. I need you to understand how traditional he is. He is going to probably say alot of rude and unnecessary things. I know the way he is, and I don't want you to get upset about what he might say or do. I won't let him hurt you, or cross a line, but I can't stop him from running his mouth." I pulled my Bottom lip into my mouth and thought about what his dad would be like. Would he look like his dad? Even though they seem to have a hard relationship, I could still see how much he cared for his father. Even if he didn't agree with his father, he must still love him. I mean, I don't always like my dad, but I'm sure its for completely different reasons.
"Hey, no matter what happens, at least I have your mom on my side. although she seems nice, she sure looks like she could scare anyone, even your dad." I laughed, and Dorian chuckled, looking more like his normal self.
"That's true. I think even dad is scared of her. He always tries to play it cool, but when my mom gets this glare on her face, he sits up just a bit taller than he normally does. it almost looks like he was holding his breath." he chuckled some more and I couldn't help but smile. I watched as his smile turned for the worse, as he got a glint of mischief in his eyes. In just moments, he tightened his hold on my waist, pulling me closer to him. I yelped at the sudden motion and felt myself being lifted in the air.
"Ready for a swim?" I gasped and begun holding my breath as I felt the air fly around me, and I was glad I did.
He launched me right off of the small cliff into the pond, and as I hit the water, I was so thankful that it wasn't freezing. I smiled at the feeling of the water engulfing me. I've always enjoyed swimming, in fact, it was one of my favorite things to do. During the summers, when my parents were at work, me and Angel would often walk to the local pool. It wasn't until recently that I was able to go in the bigger pool, because Molly still couldn't swim, or even try. so we would mostly play around in the kids section which had plenty of levers and wheels that would cause water to pour over us.
When I felt the bottom of the lake mush under my feet, I grimaced and kicked myself back up, taking a huge gulp of air as I reached the top. I shook my head to get rid of the extra water before it fell into my eyes, and sent a glare at Dorian's direction. He laughed, but I just splashed water at him, and laughed myself when some went into his open mouth. We spent the next hour or so playing different games. Okay, so mainly playing Marco polo. But to be fair, the water throw's off Dorian's hearing, and speed, so the game was pretty fair, so of course I wanted to keep playing.
I was pretty content after so many games, were it was obvious that I had won by a long shot. I giggled as he search the pond as i sat just on the beach-ish sand that lead to the only opening. it was more of a small little spot of sand, that was surrounded by trees, and I'm sure the shore was non-existing when it rained and the water raised. I traced my fingers through the grains, mumbling another polo as Dorian slowly drew closer to the shore. What was the likability that out of all the places, all the shores, and all the rivers, that these particles of sand just happened to land here? Was it all up to chance? Did they just happen to catch the right wave?
"You cheater" I heard right before I was tackled. My back hit the sand, and Dorian had his arms around my waist, embracing me.
"If your going to be a fish out of water, than I guess your my lucky catch of the day." Dorian spouted, and I just couldn't understand how he could say something so sappy, so easily. I could feel a blush creep up my cheeks, and the cold water hitting my almost dry skin, and shivers ran along my spine. I laughed out of sheer awkwardness. I mean, what do you even say to something like that?
"Now i feel like nibbling. Can we go back to the food now?" I asked. i almost wanted to smack myself. Nibbling? who in the world even uses that anymore. How lame can i be? Dorian didn't even seem phased by my lame remark, and just leaned back, getting up while pulling me with him. As we walked up the small hill, and around some of the trees to his set up, he never let go of my hand. He just held it gently, guiding me and preventing me from falling when I tripped.
God, what have i gotten myself into.
