Chapter Six.... Waverly
I shifted uncomfortably next to Kayleb. It felt weird being pressed up next to him, but it wasn't in a bad way; it was just weird. I kinda liked it. What was I thinking!? I mentally scolded my self. Kayleb was like a second brother to me besides I liked Jaycob, and I was certain that he was at least starting to like me. The lights turned off and Jaycob pressed play. He skipped through the advertisements and whatnots and got straight to the actual movie. The title flashed onto the screen. "No, no, no! I am not watching this!" I said. I jumped up from the couch. It was one of those super scary horror films, and I knew that I would have nightmares forever if I watched that. I started to walk away when someone grabbed me around the waist. It was Jaycob, but then again who else would have done it.
"Oh, come on. I'll protect you." He said in my ear. I didn't say anything for a few seconds. I had to recover from the surprise.
"Uhumm..." I squeaked really unsure about the situation. He dragged me back to the couch, but he didn't let me go. I had to awkwardly sit on his lap. "You know I think I'll just go and do something else." I tried to get up, but he wouldn't let me go.
"No you're going to stay here." He shifted me over to the side so that I wasn't right on top of him, but I was still sitting in his lap. I ended up being glad that I stayed because I really enjoyed the movie, and it felt so good being so close to Jaycob. I pretended to be scared several times so that he would hold me tighter and whisper reassuring words to me.
It was midnight by the time Paxton and I got home. My dad was just finishing up watching a movie of his own and we all headed to bed. I had a hard time getting to sleep, and I kept thinking about how different I felt when Kayleb and I had been touching. I was delusional, I decided. It was the first day of summer, and I was tired, and a lot had happened that day. I probably just imagined it. I drifted off into a restless sleep.
Days full of flirting, late night movies, and amazing dinners passed and before I knew it we had been at the Summer house for almost a month. Sun streamed through my windows and woke me up. I went down stairs and discovered that it was still fairly early for my brother and dad to be awake so I decided to surprise them with breakfast. I couldn't cook of course, but there was a store nearby, and we needed groceries anyway. Everything we had was left over from last summer and countless years even before that was canned, dusty, both canned and dusty, or new stuff that we would never eat. I quickly ran upstairs and pulled a brush through my unruly hair, and I threw on a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. Before I left, I wrote a quick note explaining where I'd gone. After grabbing the keys, I hopped in the car and rode down to the closest Wal-mart. I grabbed a basket and assumed a measurly pace and started to pick and choose what we needed, or more importantly the stuff we would actually eat and the stuff that I had to buy to make my dad feel like he was doing a good parenting job. Don't get me wrong, I love my dad. He just isn't very good at acting like an actual parent. He was more like a big kid. He married my mom when he was young, and she always took care of him, and me, and my brother.
I paid for the items in my basket and loaded them into the Mazda. On the drive home, I noticed a book store and decided to treat myself to a new book. I heard that the new Kane Chronicles book was out, and I was just dying to read it. Knowing my dad and brother wouldn't be awake yet, I ordered a smoothie from the store next door and settled down at one of the tables to read. I was deeply immersed in my book when a teenager interrupted me.
"Excuse me, but I think you dropped this." He smiled at me, holding out a pen. His black hair flopped down on his for head. It was really shiny.
"That's not mine." I said.
"I know, but I needed an excuse to come talk to you." He said sweetly. I was flattered, but would he really have done this last summer when I was still ugly? It was probably only because of my transformation, but I could use him to get Jaycob jealous. "So, uh, what's your name?" He asked, trying to get a conversation started.
