Chapter Twenty..... Waverly
His hand twitched. He rolled his head side to side. "Guys, I think he's waking up!" I said happily. Everyone gathered around Kayleb's bed, eagerly waiting for his eyes to open.
"Where am I?" He moaned.
"Kayleb you're in the hospital." Kathleen said as she gently caressed his face.
"My head hurts." He whined.
"I'll bet it does." The doctor said, coming into the room at the right moment to hear his complaint. "That guy hit you pretty hard. Luckily, he avoided the most vital areas although you do have a bit of swelling. You're just lucky that your skull didn't fracture. You have one hard head, kid." He chuckled.
"Where's Jace?" Kayleb demanded.
"He's in jail for the time being." I said, wanting to get away from that topic of conversation.
"I'm hungry." He complained.
"Typical boy, always thinking about food." I grumbled, except I had a smile on my face. That one complaint let me know that he was going to definitely be okay.
"Hey guys can you give me a moment." He asked. He wanted us to leave? I thought. We all filed one by one out of the room.
"Waverly, will you stay?" He asked as I was half way out the door.
"Of course." I said as our parents exchanged knowing smiles. I moved a chair as close to his bed as possible and sat in it.He waited until the door was closed before he said anything.
"Waverly," He began.
"No wait," I interrupted. "Let me talk first." I took a deep breath. "I am so sorry that this happened to you because most of this is my fault."
"Waverly," He tried to intervene.
"No, let me finish." I said. "I wanted to say that I'm sorry that I treated you so coldly. I only did it because I was scared, and I was trying to do the right thing, but nothing was happening the way I had imagined it would. And I wanted you to know that I have always, deep down, had feelings for you, and I still do even though you probably might even hate me now." I finished. "Okay now you can talk."
"Waverly, I still love you." He said. "You are kind, funny, and amazingly beautiful. I have always loved you, and I always will. No matter how angry I might seem, I will always love you. And none of this was your fault." I couldn't believe it. After everything that I had done to him, after the way I had treated him, he still felt this way about me. He truly loved me inside and out. And I love you. I thought. The realization struck me. I loved him.
"Kayleb, I think I love you too." I said quietly. He was silent for a moment. Oh know, he didn't really mean it! I panicked.
"Are you sure because I can wait if I have to." He said quickly. I relaxed, and laughed. This boy really was amazing.
"Of course I do. And I don't want to ever lose you." I whispered. He grinned.
"Come closer." He said. I did what I was told and leaned in towards him. He took my face in his hands. I closed my eyes, and he gently brushed his lips against mine. I shivered as electricity traveled between us.
"That's enough Kayleb. I don't want you to hurt yourself." I said reluctantly pulling away. He groaned in complaint. "Hey, once you get out of here, you'll have the rest of the summer to do whatever you want."
"I know. Know get me some food woman!" He ordered jokingly.
"Hey! You'll make your own sandwiches while I'm around!" I laughed as I walked out of the room to go get us some funky hospital food.
