She pops a grape into her mouth “I’m just saying, we’re all a little gay.”

I look at her, “Alex, how exactly did we start talking about this?”

She looks at me like I just said I was allergic to bacon. “My cousin is gay.”

“Right.” I grab a few grapes from the bowl, toss them in the air, and catch them in my mouth.

“So, like, girls say they ‘love’ their best friends and it’s not exactly like real love. It’s a sister type of love, you know? And guys have bromances, and they love their dad’s so...”

“What kinds of bromances do you mean? Is it like sister love?”

“Yeah kind of.” She glances over towards the hallway.

“Lex, did you do this as a stake out or…” Alex and I were sitting in my living room. She had spent the night at my house last night as an end of the first week of school treat. I was starting to think, though, that she did this to spy on Aaron. “You do realize that we all figured it out.”

“What?”

“It’s obvious that you like him.”

“Oh.”

“Just don’t break his heart okay?” Alex was a bit of a player. She dated a lot of upperclassmen last year.

“It’s 12:30, isn’t he up yet?”

“Shoot.”

She looks at me, worry all over her face. “What’s the problem?”

“Um, Jeremy and I are going to get ice cream at three.”

“Okay, let’s get you ready.”

She grabs my hand and leads me up the stairs. “Alex, is it really going to take two and a half hours to get ready?”

She looks like she’s about to answer when she sees Aaron. “Aaron, where are you off to?”

Aaron had his hair in its usual style, bangs side swept with a little gel to keep it in place. He had on a light green shirt, khaki shorts, and his black Adidas. “Seriously, Aaron. Where are you going?” I ask.

“Off to meet the guys.” He says and tries to brush past.

“Uh, no.” I grab his arm. “You’re just trying to avoid Jeremy aren’t you?” He stares at me for a moment before nodding his head. I roll my eyes and let go of his arm, “You’re ridiculous.” He shrugs and walks down the hallway. “Stop staring at him.” I yell whisper at Alex. She turns and walks into my room. She grabs my flat iron from my desk and then heads into my closet.

“Now, we need to make you interesting. First we need to get rid of the waves, he hasn’t really seen you without them. Second, we need to make you subtly sexy.”

“Subtly sexy? What’s that?”

“Have you ever paid attention to what I wear?” I sigh, realizing what she said is true. With the way she dresses and her personality, she always had a subtly sexy look to her. Alex was a risk taker. “Now, what type of personality to you want to give to him? Hard to get, down to earth, flirty, Plain Jane, or tomboy?”

“Hard to get.”

“Awesome let’s get to work, or more specifically I can get to work.”

For the next hour and a half, Alex works. She straightens my hair to perfection before she does my make-up. She makes me put on my darkest pair of jeans and a light purple high-low tank top. She hands me my silver flip-flops. “Take a look.” She spins me so I faced the mirror that hung on the back of my door. I stare at myself in disbelief for a moment.
