I tap my boot against the hardwood floor in the foyer of my house. Alex stands in the doorway of the kitchen. She tosses a brown curl out of her face and shakes her head at me. I shoot her a look. She wore a high-low white lace dress with a jean jacket and brown combat boots. She and Aaron were heading out on a date and she came earlier than expected. So Aaron had been running around trying to get ready. Talk about irony.

I start pacing again. Now Jeremy gives me a funny look. I glare at him. He rolls his eyes before typing, probably, another message to Logan who’s been trying to talk to him all day. He sighs with frustration as his phone dings again. He puts the phone up to his ear, “Okay, dude. What is it?” He turns and walks down the hallway to the living room. I stare after him, “Whoa, okay. Slow down man. Who asked you out?”

I giggle and look at Alex, “When it comes to talking about BF’s and GF’s we all sound the same, don’t we?”

Lex nods, “We really are. I mean you didn’t react like that when you found out about Aaron and me, but that’s different.”

“Yeah,” I look over at Jeremy. His smile, even if it’s not directed towards me, gives me shivers. It was so genuine and big, it made me feel like we made the right decision on his birthday.

He puts his phone in his back pocket and walks over to us, “You are not gonna believe who Logan just got asked out by. Here’s a hint, I used to work with her.”

“Shauna Case.” Alex and I say in unison. I look over at her.

She shrugs, “I did a little research when you started dating, okay.”

I scoff, “And you thought I was weird last year when you started dating that junior. I told you he was going to cheat on you and you didn’t listen!”

“Okay, first of all, he would have been a sophomore but he was smart and skipped a year. Second, he did that only to, like, three girls.”

“He was notorious for it.” She opens her mouth again and shuts it, “You can’t deny it. Besides he transferred so you can’t ask him about it.”

“Girls?” Jeremy cuts us off, “Can we get back to the matter at hand?”

“Which one? Shauna or Amy?” I ask.

He sighs, “Ray,” he had taken to calling me that over the past two weeks, “What do you think?”

I roll my eyes, “She’s not here yet.” Jeremy shakes his head before looking down at his phone again.

“Aaron’s hair,” Alex looks at me, “If it was as blonde as yours, it wouldn’t look right. The way it’s styled I mean.”

“Really?” Jeremy looks at us with an exasperated face.

I ignore him, “It really wouldn’t. He would have too much of a surfer boy look.”

“Why do girls car about a guy’s hair?” Jeremy looks up from his phone.

“’Cause we’re girls and we talk about that stuff.” I reply.

“I wonder why it’s not as blonde as yours though. He spends a lot of time outside.” Alex shifts her weight.

“It’s because my head is shoved up a football helmet for half the summer and fall.” Aaron says as he walks down the stairs.

Alex and I look at each other and burst out laughing. Aaron looks at us disgusted, “You guys are nasty.” He grabs Alex’s hand, “Let’s go, Lexie.”

“Ah, come on Aaron. Don’t be a party pooper.” I giggle.

He sighs and opens his mouth. The ring of the doorbell cuts him off. My heart immediately starts beating hard and fast. It’s a good thing my footfalls already sound unsteady. I think to myself as I cross the hardwood floor to the door. I grip the painted gold handle in my hand, it slides off. I wipe it on my jeans before opening it to see them. I step back as I let the door swing open. Amy, Tyler, and Mrs. Bower stand there.
