“Here we are.” My Mom pulls her SRX into his driveway. I still wasn’t sure of myself and what had happened over the past week.
“Thank you, Mrs. Swuarez. Actually, thanks to all of you.” Jeremy smiles at my mom and then at everyone else.
“I’ll help you get your things.” I grab the door handle and get out. I round the back of the car as my mom cuts the engine. I hit the button on the hatch that will make it automatically open. I grab his duffle and sling it over my shoulder. He puts his hand on my arm.
“What’s with you?” He stares at me. I blink a few times unsure of what’s going on. “I mean, you seem so distant.” Was that look in my eye again? The one that went away when I moved out here?
“What do you mean by distant? I’m right here!” I hit the button making the hatch come down.
“You just seem like, I don’t know really. I guess you just seem off. You’re not acting like your usual bubbly self.” He searches my face for a reaction. I try to keep my face blank. He takes a step closer, “There isn’t anything you wouldn’t tell me, right?”
“Um….” I chew my bottom lip. Here goes nothing. “Well, no.”
He puts his forehead on mine, “Then what’s holding you back?”
“Things.” I break free of his arms and turn towards his house.
“What kinds of things?” I feel his body heat generating from him as he walks beside me.
“It’s complicated.” I let him unlock the door before I continue, “Look, I don’t want to talk about this alright? I have my reasons why I haven’t told you. Just be patient.”
“Could you at least give me a hint?” Why does he want to know so badly? I want to tell him on my own terms. Not like this.
“Most of it happened only a few years ago.” I swallow and my breath hitches in my throat. I step in the house and drop his bag on the floor. “I should get home. Your family should be home soon. So you probably want to spend some time with them.”
He nods, “Of course.” He kisses me lightly and I go back outside. My tennis shoes crunch on the icy snow as I walk towards the car. “Hey wait!” I turn my head in his direction, hand on the door handle of the car. “I want to take you to the studio next Sunday. Is that alright with you?”
“Yeah, that should be fine.” I climb in and I didn’t give a second glance to his house as we pulled away. I breathe slowly and focus on the car’s floor mats as we drive to our house.
“You two seem to be getting pretty serious.” Jackson turns around to look at me.
“Like you haven’t had any serious relationships?” I put a cheeky smile on my face to try to distract myself from the conversation I just had with Jeremy.
“FYI, I do have a girlfriend. She lives in Carson City. We met in one of my classes.” He narrows his eyes.
“Which one?”
“World History.” He blushes.
“I haven’t heard anything about her. What’s her name?” I mess with the zipper of my North Face jacket.
“Rebecca.” He gets a dreamy look on his face before turning around.
“Puppy love.” I mutter under my breath as we pull into our driveway.
“What was that, Sweetie?” Mom asks from the driver’s seat.
“Nothing.” I grab my bag and get out. I go up to my room and drop my bag by my closet before I jump onto my bed. Tomorrow Beverly Hills Elite went back and I really didn’t want to start up the second semester of school yet. I hadn’t had much sleep and just wanted to stay home for a few days. I had asked my mom to stay home and she told me no. I untie the laces of my Nike’s and toss them into my closet. I felt really confused about a lot of what just happened.
