Dear Mr. and Mrs. Piece of Paper,
I'm still at the village, but I've made some progress!
Today, when I got up, I decided to explore every building in this whole place to see what I could find. As it turns out, that was an excellent idea!
There were several chests around the village, and no one seemed to mind if I went through their contents. I found a few apples and another loaf of bread, which is good, but probably not enough to get me all the way home without starving. I also found a diamond and a gold ingot, but I left them where they were. Even though I didn't like these villagers, I didn't want to steal from them.
The only other thing I did take was a saddle. I was sorry to see that it was made from leather. Leather means some poor cow probably died to make it, but there was nothing I could do to change that. If I could find something to ride, like a horse, maybe I could get home faster.
Or what about my pig dream? Could I really ride Nosey or Rosy?
As I continued wandering through the village buildings, I heard a strange sound. Or I heard an unexpected sound. The villagers make all kinds of weird grunts and sighs, but this was the sound of a dog barking!
None of the villagers seemed to hear the dog bark. I wonder if they notice anything? Maybe I could lead a zombie here, just to see what happens?
Just kidding, just kidding! I may not like people, but I won't put them in danger.
So I went around, searching for this dog. And in a field just beyond the church, I saw him. He was quite big. His fur was light gray, and he had a green collar on.
A green collar? That meant he probably belonged to someone, right?
He saw me as I passed the church and ran up to me. "Hi there," I said.
He sat down and turned his head, like he understood me.
"Can you understand me, boy? Do you have a name?"
The dog didn't respond. I didn't expect him to.
"What are you looking at me for? I'm not the funny-looking one around here. Have you seen those villagers?" I whispered to him.
The dog sniffed and wagged his tail. His smiling face was pretty cute. I reached to pet him, and he let me. But then his nose was in my bag, going through my inventory!
"Hey!" I yelled.
He looked at me and wagged his tail. You see, this is why I love animals so much. They are always happy with you, even if you yell at them a little bit.
The dog was still looking at my bag.
"Oh, are you hungry, boy?" I asked. "I'm sorry." I explained, "I hardly have enough food for me. And I don't even eat meat."
The dog seemed to understand. He let me continue petting him.
I thought about my inventory, wondering if there was anything we could play with together. He'd probably like a skeleton bone, but I left those back in my cabin. All I had was a few wooden sticks.
"Hey, boy, what about this?" I offered the stick to him.
He sniffed it and barked. So I threw it.
The problem is I'm not a great throw. I'm good at battling hostile mobs with my sword and even with my shears, but I can't throw very well.
The stick soared into the air and landed on the church's roof. The dog ran after it, barking.
"No, wait!" I cried. "You won't be able to get it!"
But the dog wasn't running at the church. He ran past it and to the well nearby. Curious, I followed.
I thought maybe he was trying to get a drink, so I took out my bucket, but I noticed he wasn't next to me anymore. Where did he go this time?
I looked around. There, in the shadow of the well, was a staircase leading down.
I sighed, probably sounding like a villager. Last time I went down to some unknown place I found a creepy laboratory, a priest prisoner, and a zombie. I wasn't eager to repeat the experience, especially since I was out of those magical golden apples.
When the dog didn't come back up, I got concerned. Was there something bad down there? Only one way to find out.
I followed the staircase down and around into the ground. After just a few steps, it opened up into a stone chamber.
I stopped, totally surprised by what I saw.
There was a glowing purple door. Well, not a door exactly. Maybe a portal? It was surrounded by a dark, shiny rock that I didn't recognize. The portal itself was three blocks high and two blocks wide. Big enough for me or any dog or villager to go through.
I looked around. No dog. He must have gone inside.
I was worried about him, I really was. I didn't care about the villagers and their weird noises and trade ideas, but I liked this big dog in the green collar.
Despite my concern, I turned around and walked slowly up the steps. The sun was setting. I needed some food and some sleep before I did any more rescuing. I just hoped he would be okay until then.
Tomorrow, I'm going through that purple portal.
Wish me luck.
Alex
