Nathan and you were engaged and everything seemed to be going well, until you joined his line of work. After being left for dead you let Nathan believe you actually died in order to protect him, after a few years of hiding you're finally ready to see him again.
I feel an overwhelming sense of dread the second I set foot in the bar, it's accompanied by a large range of emotion as I spent every other weekend sat at that bar laughing and drinking. Victor leads me inside through the doors into the almost empty space, it feels strange being back here when I don't feel welcome but I feel comfortable.
Chloe is the first to turn around and look, i'm obstructed from her view as I walk directly behind Victor and as she speaks I realize she doesn't recognize me. "Who's your friend Victor?" her thick Australian accent is like music to my ears, we were good friends and hearing it fills me with guilt.
Four sit at the bar seemingly having a good time and only after the silence follows her question do they all curiously turn around. "Ah, well she's an old friend..." Victor chuckles as he leaves me stood in the middle of the room alone to resume his place behind the bar.
Charlie and Chloe still don't seem to realize it's me and the pretty blonde beside them is a new face, her eye narrow as she observes me it almost seems like she recognizes me. I have to force myself to glance at the last person who's now stood up, his face a mix of emotions but shock is what sticks out. Nathan takes a step forward and the others peer to him as he glares at me, he doesn't take his eyes off mine as he speaks.
"You're s-suppose to be dead..." he trails off his voice monotone.
I tuck my hair behind my ears nodding as I try to think of something to say, honestly I'm even surprised he knew it was me straight away. Instead of my long blonde hair I have it short and black, the big change made most unable to figure out who I was but he knows my face to well for a simple hair change to fool him.
"Oh my god" Chloe breathes also sliding off her stool and she approaches me, her mouth hangs open as she looks me up and down. I see the look in her eyes before she's smothering me with a hug and it's welcome. "I missed you so damn much, where the hell have you been?" she asks me as she holds onto me like I'm going to vanish again.
Charlie smiles to me as she finally pulls away from the hug, he also joins us and I hug him glad to see he's still doing well. "It's good to see you alive love" he says to me, his accent as gravely and British as I remember.
Victor is next to speak. "I say you two give them some space to talk" a cigar hangs from his lips as he holds a door open leading to the back rooms, the pair nod and quickly move over to him while each giving me a last smile.
I return my gaze to Nathan once the door closes behind them. "I wanted to tell you so bad but I knew what would happen if they found out I was alive, they would've gone after you." is the first thing I say after a moment, tears are welling up in my eyes as I look at him.
Nathan's cold expression changes as he sees my tears, his body language changes towards me as he hears my voice. "I watched you die, in my arms and now you're standing here" he says, I know it's hard for him and more than it is for me.
"Nate...it's not how I wanted things to go, I thought I was going to die but I didn't. I wanted to keep you safe so I made sure everyone thought I was dead but now everything's okay again." I can't help but let a few tears fall as I speak and my voice strains, it's a lot harder than I thought and my emotions are getting the better of me.
"I could've done something about them, kept both of us safe..." he turns and looks to the blonde woman who I forgot about, she looks hurt and more confused than before. I then notice the ring on his finger and as she awkwardly rubs her hands together I see the other, married. I feel into my pocket and find my ring.
I walk over to him and grab his hand pushing the engagement ring into his palm, it makes his wife tense up a little as I touch him. "I clearly don't need this anymore" I mutter backing away from him and he looks down at the pretty ring he gave me five years ago, it's been on my finger for the four years I was gone until today.
Nathan glances to the blonde who shakes her head, it seems as though she doesn't know about me and he sighs holding the ring tightly. "Elena..." he says her name softly.
"You never told me about her" Elena replies.
"I didn't want to, she was dead- or so I thought" he retorts.
I take a deep breath shaking my head "I shouldn't have come here, I don't want to get in the way or anything..." turning intending to leave before things get messy he jumps to call out to me.
"You're just leaving again?" he asks.
I look over my shoulder "I have to, you're married and I don't belong here anymore." I tell him.
"I don't want you to leave again." he tells me and it causes me to turn around to fully face him again, it also makes his wife stiffen up as she studies his face and see something that causes tears to start spilling over her cheeks.
Elena stands up loudly moving her stool and we both turn our attention to her, she wipes her face and pulls the wedding ring from her finger. "I knew you loved her the second she walked through that door-" she puts the ring down on the bar "the way you look at her gives it away, we're been married for two years and you don't even look at me like that..."
"I don't-" he cuts himself off struggling to find the words "just let me explain, please it's just a shock..." he says walking over to her clearly unhappy seeing her distressed.
"From the sound of it, you've had years to explain." she snaps before moving away from him "I'll talk to you at home, when you're ready." she says before walking past me without a single look and leaves.
I wipe my own tears as silence fills the room, he was married to a woman who clearly loved him and I just ruined it. "It's not your fault, don't cry" he says as I sniff trying to hold myself together. Nathan approaches rather confidently until he's close enough so I can hear his breathing, then he pauses like he's unsure and after a few second he places a hand on my shoulder giving it a comforting squeeze before just pulling me into a hug.
He rubs my back as I put my arms around his middle, still I'm too short to wrap my arms around his neck and he seems to have grown even more. "Elena's pretty and you clearly love her, just go after her before you lose her" I manage to say.
"I tried to replace you and it didn't work" he blurts making me pull away from him sniffing again as I blink at him. "Elena reminded me of you so much, I missed you and it was easier to just find someone similar to trick myself into thinking you were still around..." he admits.
"I spent four years preparing myself for you to have moved on, not for me to show up out of the blue and ruin a marriage...you clearly loved her if you made the commitment." I say not wanting to feel even more guilty, the fact he married her to replace me hurts but at the same time it's nice to know he never wanted to forget me.
Nathan nods taking a deep breath looking hopeless. "I did love her" he mumbles before looking down to his hands as he plays with the ring I returned to him, he holds it out to me "it's yours, it always will be" he says as I take it and smile returning it to it's usual place.
"What about that ring?" I ask pointing to the one Elena left behind.
"I don't know" he shrugs looking pained, he rubs his face and I reach up to stroke his cheek. I know this is stressful for him but I didn't think it would turn out like this, he smiles and I nod "I think you should explain all of it to her, she deserves to know everything, honestly."
He nods and hopefully we can clear everything up, it would be nice to stop it from turning into a mess because this isn't a good first impression I've made. "I love you" removing my hand I look at the ring on my finger once again.
"I love you too"
