Chapter Five

“Goodnight Justin” I spoke, tiredness evident in my muffled voice. Jazmyn went to bed over an hour ago, and now I guess it was mine and Justin’s turn.

“Night Courtney” he rubbed his tired eyes, removing the beanie from his head, leaving his hair looking static. We both walked into our own bedrooms, the darkness surprising me as I fiddled around the wall to find the light switch. I washed my face, brushed my teeth etc. Before removing my clothes and discarding them, throwing them back into my backpack. I pulled on my pyjamas and took my hair out from my ponytail, leaving it to lie at its normal length. I flicked the light switch, the darkness drowning me. Lifting up the duvet, I slipped into my bed, shuffling around until I found myself comfortable.

I sighed, the silence relaxing me as I took in a deep breath. And within the next few restful seconds, sleep had engulfed me.

I woke to the unmistakable smell of toast; the homey, warm smell took over my off focused senses. Letting my feet drag my zombie like body out of bed, I walked into the kitchen. My vision was hazy so I rubbed my eyes with my hands, removing any sleep, and soon everything was clearer.

“Morning” I spoke, my voice groggy. I walked behind Justin who was placing two slices of toast into the toaster, patting his shoulder slightly to let him know I was there.

“Good morning Courts” he smiled, he never failed to show a gorgeous smile. “You want toast?” he turned to me, one eyebrow raised.

“Yeah, please” I spoke, walking over to Jazmyn who was sitting silently in the lounge. As I got closer I realised she was reading a book based around Disney princesses. No surprise there. Chuckling, I sat down beside her as she cuddled up to my side, hugging me.

“Good morning Courtney” she yawned, still scanning through her book, although I’m sure she was only looking at the illustrations rather than reading the actual story. The toaster popping startled me, I looked over to the kitchen where Justin was taking four slices of warm toast out from the toaster.

“I think breakfasts ready” I whispered to Jazmyn who closed her book and placed it to the side.

“Courts, Jaz, breakfast’s done” Justin called us and we both stood up and rushed to the kitchen where there were three plates, each with two slices of buttered toast on. We sat down on the kitchen stools and took a plate each, including Justin.

After a long discussion between Justin and Jazmyn we decided we would spend the day at the local Park. It was a warm and sunny day today, of which I was very grateful for. Considering I was half expecting it to turn out the same way yesterday did.

I was dressed in a flowing, flowery top and denim shorts. My legs were rather brown due to my mother’s skin type, we were the two in the family which were ‘always tanned’. My father’s skin was quite pale, as well as my sisters. But of course she resorted to fake tan.

I threw on a yellow pair of converses and examined my hair that I had just scrunched up into a messy bun.

“Courtney!,” Jazmyn burst into the bedroom, panting hysterically. “Justin...is...chasing...me!” she gasped, taking a breather between each word she spoke. I chuckled once I heard Justin’s low voice growl, “The tickle monsters here, and he’s coming to get you!”

Jazmyn’s eyes widened as she ran around the back of me and hugged my right leg. I stood there, no words escaping my mouth as I placed my index finger to my lips, silencing Jazmyn.

I high-pitched squeal erupted from Jazmyn as Justin slowly walked down the hall, I could have sworn I suggested she should be quiet. He stopped, a cheeky grin spreading across his face. He turned his head almost robotically to where we stood, frozen.
