It’s been a week since I left Pattie’s room, and as I promised, I have been visiting Justin and Jazmyn regularly. We watched movies, played board games; we ate at the local cafe and took bus trips around the city. Pattie often had to go to the bank or to a work meeting, so I would stay with Justin and Jazmyn for the hour or two she was gone. I didn’t mind of course, I actually enjoyed spending time with them all, the three of them. Pattie and I have also got on along pretty well; she was a really sweet lady which only made me wonder why on earth she didn’t have a man in her life, apart from Justin but that doesn’t count.
I’d never asked about Justin or Jazmyn’s dad, I presumed it was a touchy subject so I never brought it up. There were no photos, paintings or anything at all to symbolise a dad in their lives. It was as if they never even had one.
Today was the 5th December and as I expected, it was absolutely freezing. The city’s streets were glaced over and the park was literally a winter wonderland. From my lounge window I could watch as workers desperately tried to cover the slippy roads with salt. I was afraid to go outside, I was so clumsy so I thought best if I not go.
I was wearing at least three layers, not including lingerie, and yet I still felt like frosty the snowman. I’d lit a fire previously and so the only sound was the spit and crackling of the wood and the soothing purr of Gingerbread. Tugging at the sleeves of my pink fleece I was currently wrapped up in, I sat down on my sofa. I felt so lonely, just sitting and watching the fire sway. I was jealous of Pattie and her unbelievably warm room; I have yet to ask her how she keeps it so warm. My head snapped up as there was a gentle knock at my door.
Making sure I looked presentable I opened the door, the coolness of the hallway instantly hitting me. “Hey” I smiled at Justin who stood at my door, his hands stuffed deep into his skinny jeans pockets.
“Hey Courts,” he beamed, “Mom wanted to know whether you would like to come round for dinner, we’re having lasagne so” chuckling, he raised his eyebrows, a hopeful look in his honey coloured orbs.
“I’d love to; I’ll just take a minute to get changed and such”
He nodded, a full on grin tugging at the corners of his lips. He turned around and walked back into his room, but not without jokingly saluting me first. I giggled at his childish ways and closed my door, instantly rushing into the bathroom for a quick shower. The unique sweet smell of coconut filled my room as I stepped out the shower, a warm towel firmly wrapped around my body.
After quickly drying myself I scanned my wardrobe, deciding on just a pink flowy top, extremely skinny black jeans and nude coloured pumps. Not too much, just a little classy.
I took my hair dryer and dried my hair, leaving it to lie at its own length, not bothering to curl it like I normally would when going out. I stuffed my phone into my jeans pockets and grabbed my bunch of keys from the kitchen counter.
Making sure Gingerbread had both food and water, I rushed out my room; locking the door behind me. I knocked on Pattie’s door, hearing plates clatter and muffled voices. Justin appeared at the door, his hair perfectly styled into a quiff.
“Hello again” I smirked, a cheeky grin forming on his pink lips.
“Well Hello Courts” he said, whilst gesturing me in. I walked past him, the delicious smell of Lasagne hitting my senses.
“Smells good” I called over to Pattie as she pulled a tray of garlic bread out from the oven. Upon hearing my voice she turned and smiled wide.
“Hey hon, glad you could make it” Pattie gushed, throwing a tea towel over her small shoulder. Justin closed the door after me and stood at my side. “Courtney, I think Jazmyn has set up a game in the lounge” Pattie spoke, cutting up the rolls of garlic bread.
“Pattie are you sure you wouldn’t like any help?” I felt rude not asking, but she shook her head smiling, and waved her hand.
“Thank you sweetheart but I’m fine”
Nodding, I latched my index finger around Justin’s and led him into the lounge. He didn’t need me to help him around his own room, but I’d just gotten so used to it that it was almost like a habit. As we entered the lounge I spotted Jazmyn sitting cross legged on the floor with what looked like children’s monopoly spread out on the floor in front of her.
“Courtney!” Jazmyn squealed, running over to where Justin and I stood and hugged my waist. I lifted her up and placed her on my hip, she smiled a toothy smile and wrapped her small arms around my neck.
“Hey babe” I cooed, walking over to the sofa with Justin. Jazmyn climbed back to the floor and motioned for us to sit either side of her. Doing as she said, we sat down as she handed us a counter each.
Rolling the dice, Jazmyn guided Justin through the steps of the game. Telling him the number showing on the dice or moving his hand to where his counter should go. Everything went smoothly, Justin seemed thankful for Jazmyn’s help; instead of feeling unable.
“Kids! Dinners on the table!” Pattie’s soft voice echoed throughout the lounge and within seconds we were all taking a seat at the dining table. Laid out in front of me was a large dish of hot lasagne, a plate full of slices of Garlic bread and another plate of plain bread rolls. I sat beside Justin with Pattie and Jazmyn opposite us.
“Courts” Justin whispered once Jazmyn had taken all the lasagne she wanted.
“Mmhmm?” I asked him as he scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Could you put a little lasagne on my plate?”
“Oh-Yeah-gosh sorry” I stuttered,
My cheeks blushed a deep shade of pink as I took his plate and scooped a few big spoonfuls onto his plate. Then did the same for me. I placed it back in front of him as he instantly dug in, with me following.
