Justin’s POV,

Mom held my elbow lightly, leading me around our new home, trying to familiarize me with the layout. We walked in silence; my eyes tightly shut willing the tears not to escape. I hated this. The ache in my chest was burning through my rib cage, and I thought I might just explode. I felt alone despite being with my family – but they would never understand me like Courtney. She was loving, caring, understanding... and everything good.

I was fully aware of how weak I was being, away from Courtney, but it was something I just couldn’t help. I don’t know how they expected me to react to the sudden change, the sudden distance they have put between me and Courts. Surely they couldn’t have expected me to be even the slightest bit happy?

I winced and sucked in a deep breath of air as my hip made contact with a large corner. I reached my unoccupied arm out and placed my warm hand on the cool, smooth surface. “That’s the kitchen counter” mom answered my questions in a short, cool tone. This was unlike mom; usually, she would have apologized a thousand times, feeling awful and taking all the blame. But today... something was wrong. She was giving me the cold shoulder, her hand was wrapped around my arm too tight, her voice was cool and her speech was sharp.

“Mom”, I came to a stand-still, and she soon stopped beside me too. She didn’t reply in anyway so I carried on with what I was going to say, “is everything okay? I m-mean, are you upset with me over something?” I spoke slowly, making sure I worded everything correctly.

I heard her guiltily whisper a near-silent “Oh, Dear” before I was helped to sit down on what I presumed to be a couch. She let go of the hold she had on my arm, and instead gently took my hand in hers. “Sweetie,” she mumbled after a moment’s silence. “I’m so sorry!” she whimpered from beside me, and I rubbed her back comfortingly as sobs shook her shoulders. I stayed silent, waiting patiently for her to give me the reason for her apology. “I-I shouldn’t have taken you away, I knew it was wrong but I couldn’t bare to see you get upset over saying ‘goodbye’”

I didn’t say anything – what was I supposed to say?

“And then when you came home yesterday – and you were so happy! I didn’t know how to tell you we were leaving the next day” she squeezed my hand a little before sighing. “Please say something, Justin”

“I-I don’t know what to say” I huffed, my thoughts going back to Courtney... alone. “I feel terrible, Ma” I trailed off, swiping a tear off of my cheek. Mom sniffled before whispering caringly, “Me too, honey. Me too...”

I nodded, unable to say anything else, and then softly whispered “Please can to lead me outside?”

Courtney’s POV;

I’d given up on knocking - after at least ten tries – and then decided to face the facts that they were going to be spending the day out, today. Which was absolutely fine, I wouldn’t expect any different. I just wish that Justin had told me in advance instead of leaving me at their doorstep completely confused.

I took advantage of a bit of free time, and continued to read the near-ending of Pride & Prejudice, my all-time favourite that I had had no time to read recently. It was now 9:30, and after bathing I decided this was now my ‘relaxation’ time.

That was until a loud ringing broke the rather nice silence... “Hel-“ I was immediately cut off by a rushed and distressed voice. “Courtney? Oh thank goodness – Justin’s in trouble, I’ll need you to rush to St. Bernard’s hospital.”

My body froze. My mind numb.

Until I finally came to my senses. And then I realised... St.Bernard’s hospital was situated in the centre of Miami.
