Chapter 16
I ran to my- I mean Teal's room- only to find the whole turned inside out. I suspected this might have had something to do with Jeremy. That jerk. I felt betrayed. This is why I don't have friends. And the saddest part is that we weren’t even friends for more than a day, yet I trusted him.
I needed to leave, but I couldn't leave with the room looking like this. I had to at least clean it up for Teal. I couldn't let her come back to her room looking like this. She had, after all, let me stay here out of the goodness in her heart.
I started putting everything back into their cupboards and then cleaning up the rest. Finally I had cleaned everything until I just had the bed left. The sheets were ripped off and thrown on the floor.
Sighing, I picked up the duvet and made up the bed. Looking back I saw that my bag was lying on the floor and all its contents spilled out. Somehow I wished I had hidden the journal better.
I bent down to pick up everything. Among everything, lied a couple pieces of paper. I sat down on the floor, with my back against the bed, and picked the papers up. They were the photos in the journal! I silently thanked God for Jeremy’s carelessness.
The first picture I had already seen. It was the one of all of us at the beach. The second picture was of my parents. The looked so happy. My mom’s vibrant blue eyes stuck out more than ever and my dad’s handsome face was next to her. My mom was wearing a necklace with her name which my dad had given her when they were younger.
There were more family pictures. I studied each one for about five minutes, until I felt something wet on my cheeks. I hadn't even realised I was crying.
Finally I came to the last picture. It was a picture of her and another guy. I turned it around and saw "Summer with Ian" written on it. I turned it back and studied it for some time. His dark hair fell so perfectly across his face. The more I stared at him the more he started to look familiar to me. I racked my brain to figure out where he was from. I could feel the answer at the tip of my brain, yet it was completely lost.
I don’t know how long I sat there trying to remember when suddenly it clicked. He was the hunter who killed my parents! I couldn't take it anymore. I shoved the pictures in my bag and started getting ready to leave. At least this time around I knew exactly what to pack. It made life much easier. And thanks to the mini fridge, I didn't even need to leave the room to stock up on food. And I also didn't need to take any of Amanda's hideous clothes. Funny she didn't even mention any of that. Maybe she forgot.
I was finally done packing. Right, now on to my letter for Teal. She was the only one who deserved it.
Dear Teal
I know you're going to be mad me for leaving, but please understand I have to do this. I can't explain now. If this got into the wrong hands I'd be screwed. Everyone would hate me more.
If that's even possible.
I guess it’s safe to say that even though you've been gone a few days, it’s been the worst days.
To be honest I'm glad you're not here. It would just make leaving harder. Yes, even if you were here I would still have to leave, so don't blame yourself.
In all my years I've only had one true friend and I'm glad it was you. You've been the sister I've never had. So thank you. (Hey that rhymes).
Please don't show this to anyone. You're the only one who's worth anything here. So keep in touch, I don't think I'll ever be coming back.
Love
Laine xx
I didn't have an envelope so I just folded it and put it under the bed duvet. She'll definitely find it there.
And, finally, for the others. I pulled out a piece of paper and wrote in capital:
FREE AT LAST B*****S
I left the key to the door of the table and walked out the room. I didn't lock the door since Teal wouldn't have a spare key.
It was early morning so everyone was still asleep. I planned this carefully. No one must catch me. I walked slowly, trying to take in every inch of this place. This would be the last time I see this place.
I checked the time. I still had 3 hours before people would start waking up. Maybe I should leave something for them to remember me by.
A malicious smile spread across my face.
------------------
I tiptoed to the front door. I had my hand on the knob when a voice stopped me.
"Laine?"
I turned around and was met by Teak.
"Teak?"
"Why are you up so early?" he asked.
"I couldn't sleep. I decided to go for a run," I lied. "What about you?"
"I woke up feeling hungry and couldn't go back to sleep. I heard you from the kitchen. Why do you need your backpack if you going for a run?"
"Err... because... I might have gotten hungry," I lied with the lamest excuse. Now I knew for sure I've been caught.
"Oh, yeah cool," he replied. That's when I realised that he wasn't fully awake and he might just believe anything I told him.
"Go to sleep Teak. This is just a dream. You'll see me in the morning," I decided to say, pushing my luck.
He frowned a bit. "Okay," he kissed my forehead and walked away.
I slowly opened the door praying no one else would see me. Once I was out I quietly shut the front door behind me. It was still dark outside, but the sun was starting to make an appearance.
I decided to go the same was I went before and ran into the shadows of the forest that nearly consumed me before.
