CHAPTER 22
I heard voices.
"Go wake her up," I heard Jack say, "but be gentle, she had a rough time."
I felt someone grab my arm and shake me gently. I ignored it, just wanting to sleep. I felt the same arm shake me rougher this time, but not rough enough to wake me up.
I heard a, "Hmph" and "Good God" before falling back to sleep.
What I assume must have been seconds later, I felt something cold on my face. I jolted up only to find myself soaked in water.
"What the hell?" I looked up into a pair of beautiful icy blue eyes. The beautiful girl stared at me with a scowl on her flawless face.
"And I thought dogs liked water," she said before flipping her long brown hair and walked away. She had a dark aura around her. I wouldn't be surprised if she told me she was the ice queen.
I jumped out the car and followed her into the diner. Diane's Diner. It was a nice size. Not too big and not too small. It was homely and cozy.
"This is amazing," I said as I looked around.
"Well don't get used to it, you'll be out of here in a few days," the ice-queen said. My jaw hung open. If she wasn't so beautiful I'd be appalled by her rudeness.
"Ilyana! She is here to stay with us," Jack shouted at her.
"Since when did you start taking in strays! We can't afford to give free handouts!"
"I'm going to help out with the diner," I said softly, not liking them fighting over me.
"Nobody spoke to you!" she suddenly turned on me.
"ILYANA! THAT'S ENOUGH! Go to your room! And don't come back until you've calmed yourself!" Jack suddenly burst out.
"Uggggghhh!!" She groaned, shooting me one final glare before leaving.
Well, this is awkward.
Jack sat down at one of the tables and rubbed his temples.
"You're going to have to excuse her. She doesn't trust so easily. She'll come around though."
"I understand. She looks like someone who's seen all the troubles in the world." Her coldness holds a dark story, and I'm going to find out what it is.
"Nothing like you, Laine. But she has had a difficult time."
There was a moment of silence before I let out a huge yawn.
Jack checked his watch before exclaiming, "Goodness! Its already past 12! Let me show to the room."
He walked out the same door Ilyana had used. There was a flight of stairs going up. We walked up the stairs into a small apartment.
We walked down a small passage until we reached a door. He knocked on it but there was no response. He opened the door and it was pitch black inside.
As my eyes adjusted to the dark, I could make out two beds, one with a figure lying across it.
"I hope you don't mind, but you'll be sharing a room with Ilyana. She must have fallen asleep," Jack whispered. "There's a bathroom across and I'm just down the hallway."
I nodded and he turned around to leave. The light from outside enabled me to see inside. In the bed was a pair of pajamas. Ilyana must have left it for me. Maybe she's warmed up to the idea of having me here. Myabe we could even be friends. As I grabbed it, I heard a sniffle, like someone was crying.
That's when I realised Ilyana was still awake. I walked toward her bed slowly, and gently put my hand in her back.
She whipped around so quick that I had whiplash just watching it happen.
"Don't ever touch me again!" she half whispered, half shouted.
I backed away and go into the bathroom as soon as I could. Any thought of being friends with her was gone.
------------
I laid in bed for a while. My back was facing Ilyans so I wouldn't have to see her. Since I had slept coming here, I found it hard to fall asleep again. My mind kept replaying everything that happened. To Teal, to Reed. Everything that happened since we moved back.
I wished I could go back to the day I was 9 and stop myself from being set up by Craig. In that moment, I've never wished for anything so hard, that I actually thought that when I opened my eyes, I would be 9 again.
It didn't work. Of course it didn't! Werewolves existed, but time travel didn't!
As I was going on a rampage within my mind, a ring tone suddenly went of.
"Hello," Ilyana said. I could hear a male voice on the other end.
"Hey, Babe," it said.
I tried not to eavesdrop, so I focused on sleeping, but I couldn't help my ears from shooting up at the mention of my name.
"Yeah, her name's Laine. Gramps newest stray."
I couldn't be bothered to hear what the guy had to say, partly because I was too tired to use up anymore energy trying to increase my hearing.
"Wolfsbane, you say?" She let out a slight laugh. "That stuff actually exists?"
Curious as to what they were talking about, I listened extra hard to what the guy said.
"Yeah, but that's just a werewolf term for weed. Although, I can give you some with a little something extra," he said.
So this guys a dealer? Should I talk to her about it? Do something? Probably not. She hates me enough.
"Hmmm, a little something extra for her. She's going to wish she was never born."
I gulped.
I had a strange feeling she was talking about me.
Who am I kidding? Of course she was talking about me!
