Harry sat nervously in a comfy blue chair outside McGonagall's closed office door. He looked up as the door opened wide and a chin up McGonagall appeared, an eyebrow was raised at this random request to see her, it was after all the day before school was out of the summer. Dumbledore was out of office now, on some important business he had said, Harry still hadn't forgiven him yet and he was unsure if he ever would. Harry did actually go to speak to him but it didn't turn out that well. He was told, firmly, that he had to stay at the Dursley's to complete some sort of protection. Protection? From what? Nice people? They had been awful to him all this time and Harry really did not wish to go back. As if anyone would even bother with the Dursley's. But now that he had left office, he was hoping McGonagall would be kinder.
"Mr. Potter, to what do I owe the pleasure?" She asked politely.
"Professor, can I talk to you in private?" Harry asked.
"So what can I help you with?" She asked once they were both sitting in her clean and organized office with the door shut. It smelt like brewed tea and stale biscuits.
"Um Professor, I want to stay at Grimmauld place this Summer" Harry said abruptly, there was no other way to go about it really.
She looked confused "Then what on earth are you doing talking to me? I'm sure Dumbledore would permit it"
He sighed, rubbing his neck "I already did but he" He sighed frustrated "he said that I needed to stay at the Dursleys to complete a protection until I come of age, something about blood wards"
McGonagall gave a thoughtful expression "What do you know about blood wards Harry?" He just shrugged, not a thing clearly. She took a breath "Harry I hate to intrude on personal matters but...I've heard rumours that the Dursleys have been treating you badly"
Harry swallowed hard and gave a minute nod, feeling extremely exposed, sure Ron and Hermione knew he was starved but that was only a half of it. It was difficult to maintain her perceptive eyes so he dropped them on the floor.
She spoke again "In order for a blood ward to protect them and yourself you would have to see them as home. They must show you love and affection, otherwise well simply put the wards would not stick"
Harry's eyebrows furrowed, concentrating on a bit of frayed carpet "So, you're saying that because I already don't see them as my home then the wards haven't been in place this whole time?"
She nodded. "If you do in fact not see them as family or as a loving safe environment then yes you would be correct." She regarded him carefully "Harry did they abuse you?" McGonagall asked quietly, putting a hand on Harry's arm in a comforting manner.
Harry's mind flashed back the years of hell living with them, the years of torment, the years of no food and.... He'd rather not talk about the punishment he got for forgetting something or not cleaning that grease spot completely. He gave a silent nod and then stared at the carpet again, it felt like he was completely bare, stripped of the fake smiles and reassurances that everything was okay. But if it meant he could get away, and help Draco and his mother in the process then it was worth being a bit vulnerable.
"Very well, in Dumbledore's absence I will pose as your guardian and allow your request, but he will be notified I hope you know" She took her hand off his arm "although I have a feeling you're not going to be going alone" She said with a knowing smile.
Harry looked up and gave a weak and hopeful smile, like a child who snuck into the jar of cookies and was trying to get off easy "Um, well you see Professor because of recent event Draco Malfoy and his mother are under serious threat so I though it might be better if they stayed somewhere safe?"
The look on McGonagall's face would have been priceless if the situation weren't so serious in itself. "And can you trust them?" Was the question she posed.
"Yes. I would trust them with my life" He said proudly.
She gave his face a wandering look before breathing in deeply and announcing "very well Potter, however I will be around to make sure everything is in order and if anything, anything at all happens owl me immediately"
Harry felt a grin grow on his face and he almost went to hug her. Almost. "Thank you so much Professor!" He thanked excitedly before almost skipping out of the room. "Oh and Potter?" She asked, stopping Harry so he looked back "Have a good summer"

So everything led to this moment where they were standing, Harry, Draco and Narcissa, in front of 12 Grimmauld Place. Harry took in a deep breath, he hasn't stood foot here since Sirius's death and now he wasn't quite so sure he could do this. The memories of Christmas hit him like a truck and he felt his chest squeeze painfully. He felt a hand lightly squeeze his shoulder, he turned his head and saw Draco give him a small smile and all of a sudden he felt a little better. Now was the start of something, something difficult and something that would require Harry and Draco to stay as close as possible to each other.
The End....or is it?
Updated A/N. The sequel is called the Slytherin Spy, this story is now re-mastered to the best of my ability but it does continue where it left off in that new one (with plot holes and many many typos - my bad). So go and enjoy!
Thank you for all the support and funny comments left by fellow shippers, I can't express how much a nice comment just makes my day :)
Also this is on AO3 and so are some of my other stories!
