Percy
The first thought that went through Percy’s head?
Oh, man, I am so screwed.
The daemon kept grinning at him, showing off his yellow and razor-sharp teeth, his eyes blinking sideways lazily, like a reptile. His skin was rough and saggy, flesh idly folding over flesh. His talons were long, deadly sharp and covered in a solid, green membrane, like a protective coat.
Or poison.
A shudder went through Percy’s body. He’d had way too many experiences with poison.
The daemon frowned at him. “You know you’re supposed to run away in terror, right?”
“Um.” Percy wasn’t sure how to reply.
The daemon sighed dramatically. “Demigods! Must they be so dim?”
“Um, actually—"
The creature waved his clawed hand in a dismissive manner. “Whatever. I don’t like chatting about boring stuff like that. In fact, I hate chatting altogether. So, should we just get to the part where we try to kill each other?
“Okay.” Percy said, raising his hands as if he was surrendering. Then he frowned. “Wait, what?”
But it was too late. The daemon lunged at him faster than Percy expected and knocked him off his feet. His demigod battle instincts were the only thing that saved him from getting his throat slashed by the daemons talons.
The creature swiped his claws at him from either side one at a time, Percy dodging each strike by a millimetre. The daemon was quick but its attacks were rushed and therefore inaccurate.
“Gah!” The creature shrieked in frustration. “Why.” Another swipe. “Won’t.” A blow to Percy’s face. “You.” A strike to his nose. “Die!”
Percy growled in pain and flipped them over, his arm pressed tightly against the daemon’s neck. Blood poured down Percy’s face from an unknown wound.
The creature below him struggled as Percy uncapped Riptide and got prepared to strike.
“I am the daemon of pain!” It roared. “I will not be beaten so easily!”
White-hot agony flashed inside Percy’s head and he yelled, dropping Riptide and instead gripping his head tightly, pressing hard on the temples.
The daemon took the chance and leapt up with Percy’s sword, reading to impale him while he was down.
Percy yelled and rolled to the side in time for Riptide to plunge into the ground beside him. He lunged for the sword, springing forward with enough force to knock the daemon off his feet.
