Alessandro shoves me in a blue truck and starts the engine, taking off. We drive through countryside roads with thick green trees on either sides, their thin branches scraping against the windows. Just as I start to feel we're driving to the other side of the world Alessandro stops the truck outside a whitewashed cottage. The cottage looks like something out of a fairy tale book. Honeysuckle creeps up either side of the door and heavy bunches of purple Michaelmas daisies litter the garden. The chalky path leads to a butter yellow front door with a strange huge brass knocker in the shape of a lions head on it. Alessandro marches right in and through a neat hallway into a bright heated kitchen with wooden units and very modern cooking equipment. A pot of tea and several plates of tiny sandwiches are placed neatly on the table. I'm so busy staring at the bright bold paintings on the walls that I don't notice a small stooped woman with gray hair come into the kitchen. She has very rosy cheeks and bright green eyes and even though her gray hair gives off the obvious point that she's in her elder years she has no wrinkles at all. She's the type of woman that would make you want to hug her just on sort. Alessandro mutters something in French and she squeals and hugs me tight. 'You are a Carmela!. Alessandro talk so much about you. What a beautiful young thing you are' She says in a clear, soft French accent. I blush and she smiles at me, leading me towards the table of tea. 'My name is Amelia but call me Mia. You must try one of my sandwiches. They are especially good today' She winks and I force back another blush because I've just realised. Alessandro introduce me to his mother!. It must be serious. I have to forgive him. Not just because of this but because I'm tired of fighting. I take a sandwich off the plate and bite into it. Mia's right. They're delicious. She made 3 types. Turkey and double onion (according to her. I've no idea how you can have a sandwich with double onions!), Fig,cheese and caramelized onion and then lobster, tarragon and fresh chives in a hot dog bun. All three were sandwiches I've never tasted before but they were new and they were exciting. I made a promise to myself to start making new sandwich ideas like these. The rest of the afternoon was spent me and Alessandro sitting with his mother in the kitchen, sipping hot sweet tea (another of Mia's specialties) and eating her homemade cherry squares whilst discussing things to do in France. I've never felt happier in my life than I did that afternoon in the tiny cottage in a minute village in France. Maybe this holiday will work after all.
